We just picked up a 2007 1.6 Sedici and while I know it has an electric power steering it feels heavy to me. I'm comparing this to a punto we had years ago (the one with the 'girly' button :p to lighten the steering while parking) and would say it feels heavy even under the normal usage. If this was a hydraulic power steering I'd be topping it up it.

The car is one owner from new with only 70k km on it. Is this how they normally feel or is it something to be worried about?

Thanks
Brian

Hi Brian :)

Not too busy on here now these 'Suzuki's' are so old..

Being a recent purchase there are 2 obvious scenarios :

Power flow to steering could be impaired..

Poor alternator.. old battery.. rotting earth cables

Stiffnes..seized bearing in the steering..or front suspension

The top bearings of the suspension struts can get dry and notchy

Maybe pop the track rod end balljoints and see how left and right wheels compare for lock to lock free movement

That should be a half.hour job.. and initially.. 'parts free' ;)

Do let us know what you discover (y)

Does the red light lids on dash board, too (the little steering wheel)?
It sounds like you may need a new torque sensor, that is located on the steering column.
That is the extreme scenario, the cause can also be among what varesecrazy is saying above: poeer to EPS, poor alternator, old battery, earth cables

Any progress Brian ?

With the lockdown & bad weather I didn't need to or feel like checking this since. If it stops raining this weekend I'll check it. Thanks for the advice.

The weather was good and I needed to go out so took a look this week.

Battery & alternator are good, battery has 12.8v and rose to 14odd once the car was started.

Front tyres were over inflated to 40psi so lowered to 33. There was no difference in steering but it rides better now.

Drop links, etc look in good condition (car only has 77k kms).

BUT I spotted the left hand spring is broken at the bottom coil so will need replacing and I'll do the top mount bearings at the same time as I did notice it feels notchy when steering on the motorway.

I also noticed the car wanders under hard acceleration from 2nd to 3rd for example. Parts are ordered so will update once I get them swapped out.

Just getting to sort this now, are the fiat shocks/springs the same as the Suzuki?

A local scrapyard has a 2011 sx4 with the complete struts for small money and I could just slot them in.

I dont have a spring compressor so trying to avoid having to buy one.

VERY quiet in here..

Look on Ebay.. are the new parts listed for both vehicles?

Do let us know what you find :)

To finally update my own thread...

After ages waiting for parts what started as a broken spring turned into new shocks, drop links, top mounts, and track rod ends. Despite the low mileage most of the rubbers had perished. The wishbone bushed will need doing too but I'll leave that for now.

I couldn't get the little anti friction bearings that go under the top mount for love nor money so I cleaned mine and greased them as best I could. Happy to say the steering now seems much better and the odd clunk from the front end if gone also.

Was very easy to work on which was nice too.
