Here is a cut and paste from the manual

MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT

Your vehicle has a computer-controlled
emission control system. A malfunction indicator
light is provided on the instrument
cluster to indicate when it is necessary to
have the emission control system serviced.
The malfunction indicator light comes on
when the ignition switch is turned to
“ON” or “START” and goes out when the
engine is started.

If the malfunction indicator light comes on
when the engine is running, there is a
problem with the emission control system.
Bring the vehicle to your Fiat Dealership
to have the problem corrected.
IMPORTANT Continuing to drive the vehicle
when the malfunction indicator light
is on can cause permanent damage to the
vehicle’s emission control system, and can
affect fuel economy and driveability.

I have a PDF of the Manual if you want a copy. PM me your email and I'll send you a copy.

Thanks

Hi, have just read the thread re the dashboard light and the same thing has happened to me. I brought the car second hand and it is just over 3 yrs old with 31000 miles. The AA man said it was likely to be the catalytic converter, this was confirmed by Fiat Perrys in Portsmouth who want to charge over 750.00 to fit a new one. I contacted customer care and because i am not the first owner, i am basically stuffed.
Whats the story behind your car - was it the same fault?

Just to revive this - this light has just come on on our car? Our. 1.6 Petrol is approaching 80k - probably one of the highest mileage Sedici's out there (certainly Petrol) and has never missed a beat. Returning from a journey yesterday and the light came on for the first time ever. The car is running perfectly normally? I'm thinking either Lamda (though runs fine) or Cat? Anyone offer any suggestions? cheers

probably safe to drive if the light only refers to emissions
cat converter failure is rare; our family run several cars to very high mileage and the only one that has needed a cat replaced is my wife's Tigra and I am sure this is because she is very reluctant to rev the engine beyond 2000rpm
As far as I know the petrol Sedici is not a particularly "lean-burn" engine so the cat or the lambda (or EGR valve) could be sooted up.
Suggest a full service and an "italian tune-up" and if the light is still on worth reading the ECU codes........

Cheers Tim. Yes what I figured also. The cars still driving perfectly normally. Its serviced every 12 months and I use it with 'zest' (!) Its in at MotorMech next week for a diagnostic.

OK update - The one fortunate thing for us is the SX4 is virtually the identical car. As such theres loads of Suzuki and SX4 forums (particularly in the US) and I spent a good while yesterday surfing for similar issues. I came across the identical problem with the SX4 and rather bizarrely all comments stated there is a know issue with the Emmissions light coming on when the Petrol Cap is not tightened up enough? I did question myself whether this would matter but it read the pressure in the fuel system is affected to such an extent that this can cause the dash light to come on. Thinking back on the day our Light was first seen I had filled up and tend to only tighten the cap to the first 'click'. Followed the SX4 owners advice I re-tightened up to 4 clicks and disconnected the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes. Restarted the car and no light - took for a drive - no light! Am questioning myself how long it will be until it re-appears but the car has driven perfectly normally all the while..... Weird?!... but seemably ...it works.

OK Update - after about 1000 miles on the light has finally come back on.
I'll get a scan for any codes done and report back.
However again looking at SX4 forums theres also talk of knock sensors failing on these cars causing this? Anyone any idea where that is on a 1.6 Sedici?
And as an addition theres this from Suzuki in North America:

Apparently it can also be triggered by a known ECU bug?!?!

Suffice to say our car is still performing perfectly despite......
