hi folks some advice please

the time is fast approaching for my first car. i am 17 and am hoping to do my test very very soon. been hunting around for a bravo 1.4 and i got some quotes they ranged from £2000-£3000 for an R reg. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. my dad has company insurance and is going to take out new insurance for himself and me as a named driver its around £600 for both of us.

BUT..........
i have got a set of 17" wheels to go on (they cost me £70 just need touching in (not stolen) and a rockford fosgate system that got delivered thismorning :))))))))))))) (£350)

my dad wants me to inform the insurance about my mods. can i inform them but not have them actually insured ???????????? also is it going to make my insurance rocket if i do inform them ?????

do any of you guys have your stuff insured ????? as you can imagion i will proably get pulled a bit by the local boys in blue will they do me ????

many thanks guys and girls

Alloys, and many cosmetic mods dont always affect your insurance premium. I am insured with Liverpool Victoria, and so far, alloys, tints, and up to £500 worth of Audio Equipment are insured at no extra premium. Also i have a stainless cat back exhaust system that is on my policy, and no change to my premium. Lowered supension, turbo's, induction kits, these are the ones that will getyou into high premium territory.

I cant say what your insurance company will do about it, but for a good quote, and an easy going insurance company, i'd recommend Liverpool Victoria. They are so good that I have been driving for 4 years now, and the last 3 i have had my policy with them.

You should always declare any modification, not worth the risk of an assessor refusing to pay. It's not only the cost of a car you could be out of pocket by but the cost of supporting a paraplegic for 30 years.

I don't think you can exclude items from the insurance, but upping the excess will help, as will dropping the miles driven as far as you can.

Insurance companies are usually only interested in charging for items that increase risk, like power upgrades and mods that make the car more likely to be stolen.

Let us know how you get on,

Do the Pass Plus course for starters.

Also, phone around properly. I got quotes of like £2k for my £200 Uno, but after phoning around I now only pay £770 Fully Comp with Norwich Union Direct. Pass Plus helped with that price, and it's also fully comp with 3rd party cover for any other car - rather fat!

Maybe pick a smaller/cheaper car as it is your first? The 1.4 will kill you in its fuel consumption anyway. Seriously though, at 17 you have to expect this.

do what i did mate get a cinq there wel good for
a first car and has cost me £500 fuly comp
i havent told them about my mods as there not on the car yet
but hoping it wont change any thing or else im fooked lol

when i got a 1.1 punto with pass plus the cheapest qoute i got was £900 i think a 1.4 would be a bad idea - why not opt for the more economical 1.2?

when i wrote my other bravo off i asked the insurance company which car are the cheapest to insure, he said either a low spec punto or nissan micra

so maybe a punto like a 1.1 55s would be good for starters :)

Im with CIS and they dont charge extra for any mods which dont affect the policy. But they would only give me back the price of the car if anything happened to it (minus the mods) Its costing me £1050 fully comp on my Uno which is by far the cheapest quote i found

I'm with CIS but haven't declared my mods yet

Do you reckon they'd charge more for any of them?

My car has resprayed Punto GT alloys (with locking bolts), K&N induction kit, EBC Green brakepads, Punto GT anti-roll bars, Sony MD headunit, JBL speakers, Pioneer sub, Sony amp, Punto GT centre-console, tinted taillights, and a de-cat pipe that I haven't got round to fitting yet.

You have to declare mods! If you don't you are not insured and are breaking the law. Of course if you are lucky you wont get caught but if you arn't insured why bother paying at all?

Just remember though that if you hit some law-abiding, insurance-paying citizen such as myself and it's your fault I will get nothing as you are not insured. If you hit me hard enough and I end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life I will get no money to help with the injuries that you have caused.

Now the thing you should be most worried about: - If you hit my car and I am uninjured and can walk away but your insurance doesn't pay out I am going to sue you for every penny you earn for the rest of your life! If you manage to wriggle out of it I will smash yer teeth out and break all your fingers then laugh at you trying to pick up your teeth with broken fingers.

Now some may think that this is a bit harsh? Tough! Driving is a priviledge, not a right and if you cant afford to pay the insurance then don't buy a bluddy car. I consider holidays a priviledge but you don't see me cheating the holiday firms out of the cost of the flight. I consider chocolate a priviledge but you don't see me shoplifting to get it. Do you pay for your beer down the pub? Yes!

Remember, insurance is not there to replace your car it is to ensure that if you hit someone and injure them that they get the treatment they need and compensation to (hopefully) maintain there quality of life afterwards.

To not have insurance is, to me akin to walking around with a gun with the safety off whilst walking down the high street. You don't do it.

Go on your mums policy if you can.

Insurance companies prefer women.

But i would suggest getting a more sensible car, with better fuel ecomony etc :p

Well put.

I agree Al :). Being uninsured as a 17 year old novice driver is just asking for trouble as you're in the category most likely to be in an accident. IMO anyone who is in an accident who is uninsured should be pursued for the full costs involved no matter how much, no matter how long it takes to pay. After all that's the point of insurance that it covers you if things go wrong and if you're not covered then it's your problem and up to you to take the consequences.

soon women wont be getting cheaper insurance as its sexist.
Errr sorry but no it's not. Women are not more "careful" drivers as so many people persist in saying but on average they are slower drivers and as such accident impact is lower, damage is less and therefore their claims when they are made cost less. They have as many "incidents" as men but the claims are lower hence lower risk.

If they gave women cheaper insurance just because they are women I'd have a sex change, buy a Murcielago (sp?) and become a lesbian! :D

It's all statistics, some women are mad drivers and others are safe and careful, same as with blokes. I guess because women on the whole tend to go slower and are more liable to have accidents while parking because they're useless at it than trying to overtake at 90mph in some pissing contest they are less likely to have severe accidents and big payouts.

Please note the above does not apply to me, I am more likely to have an accident in some pissing contest so sometimes the statistics belie the truth :)

How about the statistics showing how many 10's of thousands more miles the avarage man drives per year, surely the only way to really understand who is the better driver is to take the number of miles covered by each sex and divide it by the average cost of each sexs crashes. I do 45000miles a year and have never made a clame. 10 points
