hey all
just had the car 2 weeks ago and it didnt come with a radio/cd system.
Theres just a hole in the dash where one shld be.
problem is these are wires with exposed copper ends and havnt even got the little silvery bits on on the end.

i know the car has been wired up to support a sony sound system as i got 2 gr8 hulking spkrs on the parcel shelf.

how do i wire up the exposed wires (which iv never come across b4 without silver ends) into a radio..and is this a simple job...please excuse me im not a tech head like some of you guys and girls out there.

I took some pictures as I just so happened to refit my repaired radio today after an unfortunate incident where the heater matrix leaked coolant on to my amplifier which was mounted below the ventilation system, blowing up the amp! (The radio's amplifier died many years ago!).

The pictures didn't make anything clearer, so I've translated the following from the Haynes manual. Please be aware that because Fiat in their infinite wisdom used a red wire (but a black line) for one of the speakers, I would recommend you get hold of a multimeter and find which of the wires are at 12V relative to the body of the car. There should be two red wires (thick and thin) for 12V.

Also something to note; the wiring for Mrk.1 Punto's do not have an "Accessory" position for the radio, that most other cars have and radios expect, everything is live all the time, regardless of what the ignition is switched to, or even if the key is removed from the ignition.

I can see that someone has really hacked with your wiring (I wish owners wouldn't do this), you may have to peel back some of that insulation tape to see which colour the wire starts at from the car's loom.

red = +12V continuous
black = ground / chassis

yellow with black line = illumination

pink = spkr front right -
pink with line = spkr front right +

red with black line = spkr front left +
white with black line = spkr front left -

light blue with red line = spkr rear right +
light blue with yellow line = spkr rear right -

orange with white line = spkr rear left +
orange with black line = spkr rear left -

Good luck!

went to halfords today where i asked about it and the assstant said i will need to be hard-wired, which would cost me £40.00.
i know these places try to sell u all sorts of stuff that u might not nessacerilly need.
what is hard-wiring and do i relly need to do that to be able to use my sterio, or is it something i can do myself if its just something simple?

any ideas guys :D

Hmmm... I don't know what they mean by hard wiring.
The best way to do this repair this would be to buy some stereo ISO adapters (like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/universal-iso-plug-set-99497)

and join the wires to the cars loom with solder, then use heatshrink sleeving with integral adhesive to cover the conductors. You would need a soldering iron, some solder, heatgun and the afore mentioned multi-meter to identify the wires.

But a simpler way would be to cut off the ISO connectors on the new car radio and use crimp bullet connectors to join the wires, but you'd also need a crimp tool for this.

The downside to this is that if you wanted to then change the radio then you'd have to do this work again.

The most basic option I would suggest would be to use Terminal Block, and once all the wires are joined wrap it in insulation tape to stop it from shorting out.

Hardwiring is basically using terminal blocks or crimp connectors to permanently connect the stereo to the car, rather than (as Phil suggests) hardwiring ISO connectors to the appropriate wires. This is a very simple job which anyone could do, but it is time consuming. However, Halfords offer of £40 is way over prices IMO. If you weren't so far away I'd do it for 1/2 that.
