Punto (Mk1) Steven's Mk1 Punto Progress Thread

Introduction

I'm going to use this thread to document my progress on my Mk1 Punto. It's a 1999 Punto S with the 1242cc 8v engine. I bought it at the end of last week and it needs a few jobs done to it. The car has just under 75000 miles on it and unfortunately at some stage it has fallen into the hands of a chav. So the car needs tidied and de-chaved. :p

Overall it's not too bad. The bodywork is pretty good and mechanically it's good having been serviced recently and had a new clutch and timing belt.

Here's the car:

It's MOTed until July 8th 2011, so the idea is to have it sitting 100% by then.

The chavvy seat covers need to come out, I haven't seen the seats below yet, fingers crossed they are decent.

The engine seems to be running well, it had fresh oil, filters and spark plugs less then 500 miles ago. A coolant change is near the top of my to do list though. The engine bay could also do with a good clean.

I'm still very unsure about the alloys. I haven't decided whether to keep them or to get hold of a set of original steel wheels and fit them. I might be interested in a swapping them for a set of steelies with good tyres and original wheel trims if anyone fancies them.

Another job which I want to do asap is to paint the brakes black. They are currently a chavtastic shade of red.

A couple of new cosmetic upgrades to report.

First, clear indicators:

They look so much better. Need to order a set of clear repeaters of eBay now.

And a centre console from an SX. I really like this. The extra storage is useful and it just looks much better.

Next on the cards is a decent stereo and I have an ad up for lowering springs if anyone has any that they want rid off.

Dont look bad that sill repair :)

Why Not make the Lower Sill area to that line where it goes from a Orange Peel Effect to the Smooth Bodywork all black?

It'd be different, and if done with that waxy stuff, the sills should last?

looks a tidy motor - defo get the coolant flushed and changed, as you'll soon know if there is any leaks that need curing!

Did the garage who did the welding cut out all the rot from the sill, or did they just patch over the top. If they didn't remove the rot, it will continue to spread under the patch. Either way, you do need to waxoil inside the sill as the rear of the patch will be unprotected.

I like what you are doing to this car. Any thought of some foglights at the front?

Thanks. (y) The garage I used specialise in bodywork repair and have a very good name locally. I was assured that they cut out all the rot only once it was gone did they weld in the new metal. I'm fairly sure they did a good job. The sill will be Waxoyled both inside and out.

Liking the foglights idea and that SX I have been taking parts from has them fitted. I'm going back for the speedo unit soon so I might just get the foglights and switch.

Latest change is the fitting of a Fly Eyes kit. I know this will be a love it hate it thing but I really like it. It changes the look of the car completely. Ordered from www.flyeyeskit.co.uk for just over £5.00. It's just yellow film that stretches over the lamps.

Also replaced the tired old parcel shelf with a good one and picked up a space saver spare wheel as the old spare was flat.

What do you think of the lights?
