Morning all!

Just a quick question. On my mk1, i have recently been having a problem with the heating system. I would turn the engine on, wait for it to warm up, but the car was constantly blowing out cold air. Managed to fix the problem eventually. Apparently the problem was to do with an air lock in the system.

Now, it only seems to warm up when im going along and remains stone cold when im not moving. It also cools down rapidly when i come to a stop at traffic lights etc.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated :)

Cheers guys

bit of a guess here but could it be the water pump not working properly?? so when idling at lights wqter is not being puhsed round to heat the heater matrix up. but when you drive pump goes quicker and therefore shifts the water better.

some more knowledgable people maybe able to say if this is possible lol

Thanks for the reply :)

You could be right about the pump. I have asked someone else i know and they agree with you on this. I suppose the question now is "how do i fix it" lol

Something else to look at is the thermostat. It may be stuck in the open position. I had this problem with my Brava which exhibited similar symptoms. The 'stat is a lot easier to change than the water pump!!

Does the temp guage stay steady. if so rule out the thermostat, it should be just under half. I'd suspect that the headgasket has blown and that is causing the airlock

I have replaced the thermostat already. I seriously doubt it could be the head gasket though. Dad seems to think it is definitely the water pump that is on the blink.

Any idea on how much it would cost to repair?
