hi all,
recently my mk1 punto overheated whilst on a dual carriageway, it started loosing power and i managed to pull off and stop.

i left it to cool, then topped it up with water before making the short journey home, although it wasnt happy. when changing down gears, it would loose revs quite quickly and if i went down to first the engine would cut out, leaving me having to try an start the engine up again.

i got the car home but now it wont start, it will turn over but will not kick in, my dad thinks there's no petrol coming up. i've had a look at the haynes manual but can't find all of the fuses to do with the fuel pump. so could anyone please help explaining where we need to look and if there is anything else you suggest we do?

thanks for your help

headgasket maybe..... Open up the oilcap and see if there's any foam/creamystuff on the cap.....

When my megane headgasket went, it overheated and lost alot of power

i've checked under the oil filler cap and there is no foam/ creamystuff and the dipstick is coming out fine as well

hey there, what engined punto is and what year???

i had a mark 1 punto 75sx which the head gasket went on, the only way you can be sure if the head gasket is gone is to do a sniffer and compression test, either that or crack open the head, but if you do that, you will need to replace the head gasket regardless, has the car had any other symptons before it overheatsed, high temp, or no hot air coming through the vents, or kicking out alot of steam??? or smoke??? or even idle rough... all of these will be a give away.

although you wont know how high the temp could of got untill the overheat light comes on if its a 55/60 s, the "fire engines" f'iat engine name' usualy stick around half way marker then the fan kicks in......

its a 1999 T reg 1.2 petrol, i never really noticed any of the symptoms, i saw steam once but it was at night in the cold so more likely to be condensation and it did get hot on a couple of occasions but i was in traffic.

i've got a family friend who is a mechanic looking at it today, but things don't sound to good. how much roughly would a head gasket cost to replace?

thanks for the help, i appreciate it :)

yep definitely heads gone, he said it looks like its been coming as we found the mayo/sludge etc.

luckily my dad can change the head and skim :)

thanks to all for the help

parts to do it properly and head skim come to £100
headset with bolts
cam belt kit
plugs
oil n filter
coolant
new hose clips

then about 3 hours labour. make sure he skims it even if he thinks its flat and always use new head bolts

yeah that sounds about right,

may aswell bang a new rocker gasket on aswell so it looks all nice and fresh under there

am i right in thinking that if not skimmed it will warp the head?
