The more I have read on here the more confused I get.

Can I buy a fault code reader for a Mk1 punto 1.2 SPI?

From what I've read in the Haynes diagnostic bible, it depends on what management system the engine uses. Some can be read (either with a non-Fiat reader or DIY) and some can't.

Get a look at the Haynes manual. Rip off the cellophane in the shop if you have to and give it a read!

Pretty sure the Haynes manual only refers to the later models that conform to standards. The IAW 16f variety are one on their own.
They are fairly basic and only give basic answers. They use the standard 5v to 12v level shifter (duplex).
I have made up a unit myself just for fun, but like most who do this its just not worth thinking about production of it.
Some guys are resurrecting a project but I guess its going to be for self use,(cinq is same ecu) have a look here:-

At my college there is a Snap - on diagnostic comp. it cost £7000 and is amazing, thereis everything you couldnt possible need.

But halfords sell FIAT ONES.

Try GUNSON diagnostic equip.

Ive read the haynes manual and it says that there is a diagnostic plug in the loom (and Ive found it). Halfords (and gunsons) dont do a reader for the MK1. They do them for the mk2 when it became law (or something) that all ECUs should use the same standard plugs and codes. Garages (and colleges) may have the equipment but the problem is the car aint working properly so that would mean having to pay for it to be taken to a garage.
Will have a look at that project though.
If anyone has any other advice its a 1.2 8v SPI
Thanks.
