Hi All,

My car is a 65 plate punto 1.2 8v petrol, its sat at 22500 miles currently and is showing "service due", the issue is that dealers seem to be giving conflicting answers as to what is actually due, one says that its an inspection only, the second says oil, filter, pollen filter and inspection and the third says all of the previous plus a valve adjustment??

Any advice would be great guys! :D

Aaron.

Option two.

I can’t seen why such a young car needs the valve adjusted, I have a 50k mile 65plate golf which doesn’t need valves adjusting, infact I have had cars with 5 times the miles of yours that don’t need the valves touching.

Definately an oil and filter change, and then as part of that they can do their 300 point unnecessary inspection of stuff that will add nothing to the service, but at least it ticks a box in the service book

Hi Aaron,

Not a huge surprise to hear conflicting answers from dealers, they rarely seem to be on the ball. Your car is approaching 3 years old - by this stage it should have had all the filters, oil, spark plugs and brake fluid done.

All of them need to be done every 18k or 2 years minimum, although I know Fiat tweaked the service intervals a bit so that year one was basically an inspection with no replacement of consumables.

I agree with Andy about the "valve adjustment", you'd have to check out the servicing intervals in your manual to double check, but fairly certain that's something for year 4 or 5?

What has your car had done so far in terms of servicing? That would be helpful to know in order to advise better (y)

Hi mate,

The 18k service was done last year apparently, Brake fluid, oil, oil & air filters and sparks were all done last year according to the dealer.

As you say, first year was just sort of an inspection by the looks of the paperwork.

Cheers :D

I don't get these 18,000 mile services, My EVO was serviced every 18k but it's about 10k since its last service and you can tell it's feeling a little sluggish, I intend to service myself soon and up the service intervals to at least every 12k, which will cost me next to nothing done on the driveway.

Same with mine to be honest. Might just bite the bullet and do it myself this year. What makes me laugh is that they have 18k consumables yet still want it in ever 9k/year to do an “inspection” and charge through the nose for it!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, as you say you may as well get it sorted to your own satisfaction :)

Assume your car has got the usual 3 year warranty, in which case there will soon be little point staying loyal to the dealer as it will be out of warranty.

The 1.2 is a sweet basic motor, and if you don't fancy doing it yourself (I wouldn't!) then any decent garage would be able to cater for all its servicing needs in future.
