Hi folks, just got timing tool set for my punto , 1.2 l, 16v, sporting, 6 speed gearbox.
What is correct procedure to set correct timing, because my punto has obvious timing issues... overfueling, low MPG .. (max what i could get on motorway is 34 mpg) , no power, a specially when start driving. is any video in youtube, or manual in WEB ?

Thanks

Hi,
Have a look on You tube, there is two video's showing how to do the timing on there.

Dont forget to loosen off the Cam shaft pulley when 'timing it up'
it makes it much easier,

(the campulley has no keyway)

That's how BMW or Maserati might do it -- FIAT had less space so had to be craftier

When you say craftier, do you mean swap a chain for some gears, except gears take up more space as they have to intersect in order to mesh, where as a chain can be strung between two smaller gears and thrush take up less space...

Oh and ferrari and maserati use the cam belt to power both cams together like most engines with double overhead cams, the way fiat do it is probably a lot more costly

But they take up space at either end, rather than one.

The big design issue for FIAT was really how to use an existing format (you could almost say block) to get a DOHC engine.

Historically, gear driven camshafts, chain driven camshafts. belt driven camshafts and chain and belt driven camshafts have been used. Pick your engine, find another solution.

But, for example, the Maser 5000 is gear driven, the old Biturbo is belt driven, The Ferrari 250 GT is chain driven, one of the prototype V12 Jags was chain and gear driven, Ducati have used bevel gears, belts, gears and chain.

All have advantages (and disadvantages), but you knew that, anyway. :)

Thanks folks. After viewing pictures, appears to be exhaust camshaft joint with inlet camshaft via gear. Previous owner said, that headgasket been changed, so if both camshafts were out, how to find out if they are in correct position against each other. Is any marks on both ?

Car has passed test(or how you call MOT), emissions perfect, i think if there would be problems with compression, it would fail emission test ....
No any warning lights . (Apart blown bulb, but i have stripped clocks, there os everything fine) . There is picture with emission test results.

if youve got the timing tool's/ just check both cam's lock off

eg/ lock the exhaust cam first and then check see if the tool then locks the inlet cam,

if its got a phase sensor..eml light wouid be on if timing was out on inlet cam,

So i assume, it is possible lock camshafts with locking tool only when they are in correct timing position ? If camshafts are not in correct position at tdc , i wont lock them ???

it wouid be rare .. for the cams to be out,

ive only had one and that was caused by a seized alternator,
The sprockets on end of the cams have no key way..just like the cam shaft pulley..

if youve got the cam shaft locking tool's then you shouid be able to check them
in under 5 mins..its easy

if you dont have the tool's you can use a small socket extension bar..
you wouid have to cut one down to check the inlet cam tho..as theres not much room..inlet manifold is in the way..

as fingers say's download the manual.. Haynes is crap..you might be best to google.. sam naprawiam fiat punto.. its in polish but its much better for diagrams etc.. than haynes.
