So why is the oil light flickering?

Please see my post further down.

{{Could someone please tell me quite clearly, where the oil pressure switch/sensor is located on my mk2 1.2 8v punto.

And what it looks like!

Thanks.}}

Yup, next to the crank sensor.

To find it go to the engines left mount (car facing you). Go downwards and you will arrive at the crank sensor. Move a bit towards the front of the car, you will find the oil filter and the pressure sensor.

Looks like a very small black cylinder and as Dave said with a wire coming out of it.

oo just found this not very clear but gives an idea :) click pic and it will go big

Thanks people!

I had the oil warning light flickering a couple of times thismorning.

Does anyone else have trouble telling if the oil is filled beyond a safe level or empty!? I check the dipstick 5 mins after stopping and oil is half way up the dipstick, 10 mins later, there appears to be nothing except what has come off the sides of the tube leading down into the sump!

Useless!
Michael.

Ok - I found it and the plastic cap wis clipped off - I have fixed that but the light still comes on briefly, it appears to be when I come to a stop - not every time.

Any ideas?
What part does the oil sensor plug into?
Is it normal for the oil to be so far up the dipstick just after stopping the engine? (see my post above).

Mike.

Yes it is normal for the oil level to be high after stopping the engine, as a matter of fact you must let the engine cool down before checking the oil.

Go for a drive until the engine gets at operating temp (half way on the temp gauge) and come back, give it 20~30mins to cool down, check the oil level and it should be somewhere on the flat part of the dipstick.

After checking post here again.

Ok I have checked - it was below the level of the dipstick (I checked this with an impromtu adapted coat hanger). I added about 0.5-1ltr and it is now just off max.

HOWEVER

It left quite a pool of oil under the car which dripped but has now slowed to almost nothing... which I think it did the last time I added oil. With the odd drip for a couple of days then nothing. So could it be, as I think, a leak somewhere in the filler cap->sump which otherwise is fine? The leak is definately not from the sump or plug as I can see it drips from MUCH higher in the engine bay than that - toward the centre of the engine block.
(there is some fresh oil visible around the bottom of the dipstick holding tube so perhaps it leaks there?)

The saga continues.
Michael.

Ouch, that is not good.

Under pressure it could squeeze out small amount of oil for that are, and drop after drop it becomes a puddle.

I have a feeling that there is a seal somewhere that is not doing it's job. Even though I hate to admit I cannot check without looking at the engine or going underneath it so I think you will have to take it to FIAT cause bad oiling will eventually seize up the engine.

Sorry but I am out of ideas but still have a hunch a seal somewhere has gone or maybe a slight crack around the dipstick area..

Seems ok now!

I have been for a drive, the dripping has stopped entirely, and the oil level is still at maximum. I will give it a few days and keep an eye on the level and for any drips... it may just have been me spilling oil outwith the filler cap but I dont really think so.

No point worrying. May need a new sump gasket or something I guess... what fun.

Thanks for all your replies!
