Hi , Im having trouble with my MK2 Sporting and my mechanic recons it's the body control unit causing the problems, I have sourced a unit but it is from an 8V and mine been a 16v was wondering would the 8V work in mine as well or will I need to get a unit for a 16v. Also if anyone could tell me what extra's would I need to replace?? Starting motor, ecu etc etc??

Headlights not working properly, When I have my high beams on the dim lights are not on to light up the ditches and makes it very difficult to drive at night unless im going around the town, the dims work as they should until I go to high beam, I have changed bulbs etc and then brought it to the mechanic who discoverd a problem with the fuseboard under the bonnet causing the car to go dead after a few days but he couldn't find the problem with the lights, this car has nothing but electric probs

All checked the Stalks are fines, No once the high beams turn on dims are gone I have to use mu fogs to light up the side of the road, it's not very good doing it that way because Im blinding on coming traffic. The problem started when I got a guy to change a bulb on the passenger side since it's kinda difficult to get at he moved the fuse board alittle to access it back of the light, he had the power on when he was doing this and only since then the problem with the lights has started, the light adjustment on the dash doesn't work any more either. i used to be able to get the light to work after turn the egnition off and starting the car again but they would eventually cut out but now even doing that does not work

I don't know what FES is but some how i doubt he has, i only got the car back from him last week after he having it for 4months and problem still not solved, although he did manage to stop it from going dead every few days and also sorted my power steering from locking up

The reason why he had it so long was because It been a sporting he it needed specific parts but the fuse board from under the bonnet that I sourced was from an 8V and did the Job hence why I was asking would the body control unit from same 8V work on my 16V as well, I love my car but it needs NCT (Irish version of MOT) and it won't pass with the lights the way they are and it's points on license if you don't have it

Ah ok I get ya now, no idea if he has one. Surprisingly enough the 8V bonnet fuseboard is identical to the 16V the only diff is the placement of fuses for certain features, I guy I was bought it from was letting me have the Body Computer, key reader, locks and Ecu and starter for 200quid but then he said the starter been from an 8V wouldn't do on the 16V so now I don't know what to do because I though besides the engine, clutch and gearbox and a few body details that everything else including electrics would be the same, the Haynes manual just doesn't give enough info either

Starter might be the same (although has no bearing on the immobiliser), but you can't run a 16v on an 8v ECU, and the spec of your car will probably not match the Body Computer anyway, so it's not a viable option. The under bonnet fusebox is fairly generic, hence why it works.

If your problems only began after someone disturbed that fusebox, then I'd look there first.

There were issues with the early Punto's not always maintaining the dipped beam on when flicking to main, and a service bulletin issued with details on which wires to modify, but you'd have to check with your local Dealer whether your car would've been affected but never got the fix.
