My Mk II Punto won't start, the oil and the 'Code' labeled immobilizer lights on the dashboard are on when trying to start engine (immobilizer light NOT flashing), the starter motor is running. At the same time the relay switch on position T09 in the fusebox under bonnet is giving a noisy fast clacking sound when the ignition is on. Swapping it with another red 9K labeled relay the same was happening, the new relay at T09 was clacking.

Anyone has any idea what's wrong?
Is the immobilizer at fault? I don't have the code, so couldn't try with it.
Does anyone know, what's the relay switch at T09 for?

Thanks,
Vilmos

you say starter motor is running do you mean the engine is turning over as though its going to start ?? or can you just here a loud whiring noise

the code light is supposed to come on and then go out after a couple of seconds if it doesnt then immobilizer is stopping the car starting for some reason. there is a code you can use like you mentioned. that doesnt come with the mk2 punto instead its held on a central database or something.

have you tried the other key ?? normally you get 2 maybe one at fault? coudl also the be key code reader in the steering coloumn

Re: Mk2 immobilizer fault ??? Rather fuel pump control...

The engine is trying to start as usual, but is lacking either ignition, fuel supply, or both...
First I thought it was the immobiliser, but I got further, when I heard a sound of something operating without end at the same fast beat as the relay switched I mentioned. I figured out it was coming from the fuel pump area under the rear seat. As another obvious check I removed the relay T09 from the fuse box and then there wasn't any sound coming from the pump. Also the usual normal 3 second loading sound of the fuel pump isn't heard neither having the relay in nor out. As the relay itself doesn't have a fault, it must be somewhere before the relay. I suspect an ECU failure... Does it make sense?
So, what's suggested in this case? Having an ECU diagnostic test at a Fiat service??? Or is it likely that a local garage can do that?

Cheers

Re: Mk2 immobilizer fault ??? Rather fuel pump control...

there are probbaly independant specialists that can do it, worth looking them up/ phoning them to get a price quote im not sure about local garage depends on if its a big one or not as small ones are unlikel to have teh equipment. you can get it done at fiat yeah but i think they will charge about £50 to hook it up.

maybe you fuel pump has gone if you say there is no noise from it now when you turn key.

When the relay is back in place, there IS a continuous fuel pump noise, but not the normal 3 second sound of it. It is switched repeatedly on and off by the ECU through the relay, I guess.

Thanks for all your help!

That's right. The CODE light stays on AND there is this constant fuel pump and relay switching noise. I didn't know when the CODE light should be off, thought just after the engine has started. So that's locking as well...
Sounds like a complex ECU failure? I am considering sending the unit for a diagnostic test.

hmm i guess ecu is possible

but first problem is your immobiliser the light is suppposed to come on while it reads the code on yoru key and then go off. the light stays on there is no way to start car.
this may just be something to do with code. it may be the code readerin steering coloumn that can cause problems sometimes as connections on it work loose i think i was once told.

like most people you probbaly turn the key straight round so it seems like the code light goes out when you start but normally if you turn key to first position code light comes on for 3 seconds and then goes off.

for anyone with this fault!!!
ive just came across this fault T09 clicking like mad pump not coming in and immob light staying on!

A small earting point on the inlet manifold had came off held on with and allen key bolt very easy to see when the air box is off!

re connect and fired straight up!!

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !

My Fiat Punto has been at the workshop for almost three weeks and the mechanic has not yet been able to find the cause. He suspected the immobilizer and wanted to try with one from another car.

I actually googled how to bypass the immobilizer as I thought that would make more sense, and I stumbled upon this thread.

The symptoms are exactly the same: car cannot start (it actually died on me), starter runs fine, no power to ignition and fuel pump, immobilizer warning lamp is on, relay T09 clicking insanely.

I immediately cycled down to workshop with a printout of the thread and persuaded the mechanic to try it out. He was a bit skeptic, but he took a jumper wire and shortcircuited the mentioned earthing wire.

And voila! The car started right away!

YOU MADE MY DAY :)

Haha, amazing, I barely remember typing a solution to this fault
Great to see people still find me useful

Id be curious to know how many other people have used this fix

BTW, how did you manage to find this bad earth connection? It was not obvious so far away from the clicking relay.

OK, I see. In your case the earth connector was completely off or broken. In my case there was no visible signs whatsoever. The wire looked perfectly fine.
