I'll be changing my car in 6 months (or less) to a mk2 Punto so im finding out what alloy sizes are best.

Ive come to the conclusion that 16s will be the best compromise of looks and performance but want to check what offset would be correct.

Would a 30mm offset be right?

What are other peoples offsets using 16 or 17 inch alloys?

Cheers,
Chris

The Punto ill be getting is my mums!! Extra-low mileage too!

Im waiting until ive got less work to do at Uni to start changing my car, its my final year :( , then ill have my mums car and she will have whatever mine sells for as the deposit for a new(ish) punto.

The 6x15 punto alloys are 37mm i think, so if i get 7x16s or 7.5x16s i reckon the offset should be about 30mm, i could be wrong though.

size is irrelavant, weight and tyres denote the performance.

stick to 14's unless you are serious enough to spend the extra to get super light rims and pricey tyres other wise dont waste your money on exhausts and induction kits as you waste your money.

lose 20% power on the wheels, gain 5% power pack on gas flow management..

pointless..

Im not bothered about performance to be honest, ive got a 1.0l uno now so anythings gonna seem faster than that, and if i wanted a really fast car i wouldnt get an 8v punto!

Back on to my offset question, it seems that the offset most people would choose for 16s is 35mm, but if someone could back me up on this it would be great. People who have 16s, id be interested to know what offset your using.

Sorry to digress again, need to comment :p

It depends what type of driving you do. If you do motorway/dual carriageway driving then you're right big, heavy wheels have an effect on speed. But around town driving there is little difference. Some people are willing to lose a little extra speed to make the car look much better, 14's look terrible on a nicely modded car.

I dont see how induction kits and exhausts are a waste of money either, considering they are cheaper than other mods you can do. They make the engine more responsive therefore the car nicer to drive. And like Chris said why would we have a Punto if we wanted performance

Anyway back on topic (y) (And Lowtechguy thanks for rating my car in the gallery (n) )

Am I being tested

Well its true, a normal 1.2 8v is not going to win any medals is it? Like I say around town its fairly nippy even with 17s on, its just where torque is needed, it struggles.

The comment about 14's was meant for cars that can fit bigger alloys, you're being a bit naive there I think. The smaller the car is, the bigger wheels look. And I dont think your car looks terrible.

well how slow is it in normal driving such as acceleration and whats the handling like remembering ive got an 899 cinq with full lowered apex kit

sorry for all the questions and no your not being tested but your usually helpful:worship:

No probs, that post wasnt intended to cause offence.

Normal driving its fine, a few weeks ago I drove a 1.6 Focus then got back into mine and thought it was going to be really slow. I was surprised because around town, there really wasnt much difference. Ive got some lowering springs fitted, on standard shocks and handling is good (the big tyres help too) It grips the road and people have commented how well it is in the corners ;) Only trouble is the ride quality is pretty poor, but who cares?!
Country roads are good fun as long as the revs are kept high ;)

mines brill in the country lanes and i can nail my mates metro the only thing that kills it is hills if you want to keep it at 30 if you know what i mean Hopefully a punto will be better

ive decided im getting a punto next and my dad agrees with me which is rare but i havent decided on which mk but it aint gonna be for a while yet as ive gotta finnish doing my cinq ehich includes putting a full bodykit on which ive got, totally re doing the dash, fitting recliner buckets as i got bored of the cobra clubmans, finnishing the ice and fitting an exhaust

not a lot to do then

thanks for all the help wolfrace, no offence was taken

and sorry chrisunoman for jacking your thread but you seem to be in the same situation as me:D
