Thumbs down Engine not starting after head gasket change

I believe ignition is working because i removed the 1st spark plug and starter motor turned faster. plug was also wet in petrol which means throttle body connections are ok when i re-fit everything.
tried re-doing the timing belt twice... no luck.
everything is connected, nothing left....
ideas? new leads/battery? the battery is pretty beat up by the looks of it ( i just bought the car )
i ran the starter motor quite a bit to circle the oil in the engine as i changed oil aswell during the gasket change

Re: Engine not starting after head gasket change

I think the engine is flooded though... gonna let it dry (no spark plugs)
and try late tomorrow evening

Re: Engine not starting after head gasket change

Could be a couple of things. Its possible to be 180 degrees out with the timing. But its also worth checking that you put the alternator belt pulley back onto the crankshaft pulley properly. Between two of the three bolt holes, theres a tiny little locating peg which is so easy to miss. Very common. Best to check that thats lined up other wise the sensor pics up wrong readings. If its not this, try redoing the timing by rotating the crankshaft one turn. Dont worry about getting it wrong as its a non interference engine therefore wont damage the valves etc. It is possible to put the HG on the wrong way round, i did it once. Blocks the front oilway that delivers the oil to the cams, but the engine can be started regardless. Good luck
Thanks Momanatorz thanked for this post

Very useful info there mate! thanks alot
i am def sure the head gasket is right way around cos there's a sloped hole and i matched that with the head. and the thicker metal side of the rings face down. i think? i dont really remember that now lol.
it must be the crankshaft pulley peg thing, as i just whacked it on whereever the three bolts to hold it fitted. so if the sensor picks up wrong reading it wont start?
i don't quite understand how to line it up...
so on the actual crankshaft sprocket there's a lil thing stickin out?

Re: Engine not starting after head gasket change

Nice one It's such an easily done thing on the first time. But now you know it's there, i bet you won't fall into that trap again! They should have really made the peg a bit bigger so you can actually notice it...
