Hi guys my cars just come back from the garage having had the drivers side front spring replaced, and they advised me that the strut top bearing is worn. Does anyone know how hard a job it is? Is it diy or back to the garage? If so any ideas on the cost involved?

Thanks in advance!

If you can't change a spring you can't do the top mount bearing, as you need to take the strut and spring off to do it.

I am having a go at this myself in the next day or two, as long as you're sensible with the spring and approach the job with an err of caution it's easy enough to take them off. Never point the spring towards yourself or other people.

You can get the spring release clamps off ebay for a few quid, essentially they're just a long threaded bar with a nut and a hook at each end, clamp them on the spring to compress it down and release the securing bolt at the top then bobs your uncle.

It is possible to do it with just two clamps but, from my experience it's handy to have a third around just incase you find the spring flexing to one side.

Was quoted just over £20 for the bearing part from andrew page.

Mind if I ask what symptoms you're having? With me I replaced the springs and shocks a few months ago but the left side spring torsion strains then clunks at low speed when turning full lock, I believe the bearing has seized. I'm only having the problem with one side so I see no need to do them both.

£120 is a bit expensive IMO

Parts are £40
plus 2 hours labour

I hit a pot hole just outside my house and there was a huge clonk, and every time i turned the wheel it would happen again took it to the garage who replaced the broken spring.

Now i get the very slight occasional knock, the garage only flagged it up as an advisory but it'd have been nice had they said, and i could have got it done at the same time! :bang:
