I'm slowly getting to know my new Punto and am struggling to do one thing: Change from 1st to 2nd gear without a judder.
Here's some info:
- Not so bad if I put all the electrics on (A/C, heater etc)
- Only changing from 1st to 2nd gear. Pulling away from stand-still is OK.
- I can do a smooth change, if I take ages over the gear change and let the revs drop right back.
- Appears as if clutch is either on or off.
Other things I've notice that could be related:
- Acceleration is very on/off. Tap the accelerator and you will be pushed back into your seat.
- Idle is about 600RPM when no electrics on.
- Idle is about 1000RPM with electrics on.
- Tried controlling the rev counter with the accelerator, but they seem slighty out of touch with each other.
- Every 15 secs or so at idle, you will feel the car wobble as the idle speed drops a fraction.
I spoke to a Fiat mechanic today and he thought it was unlike to me the clutch, as finding it hard to get into 1st & reverse are the first symptoms of a worn clutch. I mentioned the idle and his initial response was that it could be carbon build up on the stepper motor.
I'm good at jigsaws, but I can't piece this one together. I half suspect that my jumpy gear change is related to the rev/s acceleration at the time when I let the clutch out.
Any clues? Sorry for the lengthy post, but wanted to try and avoid follow-up questions.
