Hi everyone, I have a 1998 (R reg) punto (60s), I've had it about 2 months and within the past week I've noticed a strange Squeeling noise coming from the passenger side, it sounds as though it's coming from the back wheel.

The sound isn't always there and when it is it can get quite loud, it stops when I press the brake. I'm not mechanically minded so I asked a friend what it could be, he said it could be dust on the brake pads causing friction. Is this likely?

The car handles well and their is no noticable symptoms to anything except for the Squeeling sound.

Does anyone know what could be causing this sound and how to fix it?

Thanks everyone in advance for your feedback.

Does it increase in frequency when you pick up speed?

Wheel bearing maybe?

If it changes from a squeak to a wherring noise, then it's most probably the bearing.

It's not the handbrake cable fault, by any chance?

I've just had this rectified and it does sound as though it's coming from the nearside rear. Worse on rough roads and went away in the damp/rain.

It can sometime increase in frequency when I pick up speed so I'll get my mate to check the bearings and also the handbrake cable.

Thanks for your replys
