I have just found out that the cam carrier gasket on my mk 2 (1.2 16V ELX 28000 mi) needs replacing. The leakage is causing oil to accumulate around a couple of the spark plugs leading to mis-fires and a lumpy ride.

Has anybody else out there had a similar problem with their mk2 and if so how much did it cost to get repaired?

Cheers

When I changed my spark plugs a week ago, I noticed on a couple of the old plug had a bit of oil on them. My car also misfires too. Could this be the same problem?

wait a sec, 16v cam box gasgets are a bugger too do.
did you mistake it for an 8v dave? :D
bazd123, no it wont cause you a problem since the oil will never get deep enough however on the 16v the plugs are in there own hole in the center of the head so can get totaly submerged in oil [:0]
ezy life, the jobs a big one if it really needs doing since you have too remove the cambox, cambelt, time the engine etc.
ive done a few in the past on mk1's

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I have put the Haynes manual in front of a mechanic friend and from their viewpoint the job does appear to be a bit involved. It looks like I will be returning to the garage in the near future (££££ b$l!ox).

I still think you could do it yourself. granted its not as easy as 8v, but still A DIY job give it a go if you get stuck then get the mechanic friend to help out.;)

UPDATE:

I took the car into the garage to get it looked at and the problem, as mentioned before, was the cam carrier gasket. I booked the car in and the mechanic cleaned the oil from the spark-plug pots and I enjoyed a smooth ride home.

I returned to the garage yesterday to get the new gasket fitted and they have just got back to me and said that the engine is running smoothly again. However, the car is now revving high at idle and the garage have told me that it needs a new brake-servo to fix this problem (this 'aint getting any cheaper for me guys + girls!)

Should there be any problems of this type that may be induced from the repairing of the gasket? I would assume that the engine management system would make sure that the engine reverts to running as it should do as soon as the new gasket was fitted.

its prety easy too screw up the valve timing on this engine if you dont know what your doing, i hope that was a specialist garage you took it too.
brake servo, sounds a bit weird?
