When i drive my punto i hear a rattling noise coming from sumwere im guessing its from the exhaust but im not sure. It happens in higher gears and when going up hills can anyone tell me whats making this rattling noise an how i can fix it? Its an M reg so its a pretty old car.
It also backfires sometimes aswell which is another problem i want to sort or get sorted any ideas what mite be causin that?

It seems like its coming from the outside and from underneath the car but im not sure I think its coming from the back.

u say it backfires aswell so u have an engine problem, are u sure the rattling isnt cumin from the engine? if so it cud be pinking (pre-ignition)

It may be coming from the engine if I took it to a garage would they find the problems with it or would I need to point them out? and would this be expensive to fix?

I'd be tempted to check the spark plugs whn looking into the backfire...then the HT leads, coil packs and so on.
As for your rattle...it could be something daft like an exhaust rubber has worn so the exhaust rattles.

Yer i don't think the rattling is anything serious. The spark plugs are ok am guna get some new leads soon ill see if they make it any better. Thanks for the help.

The other thing that may cause backfiring at a guess would be the timing is out...might be worth just getting the timing checked and a new cambelt and tensioner if these haven't been changed for a while. I think 40k miles is the advised interval.
