Here's my old 320

As entered in the 2009 PPC £999 Challenge. Bloody Hell it was slow and I'm hoping this hears Panda will beat the 16.3 second quarter mile time it set.

Still a great laugh to drive though and is still on the road today in "Gulf" racing colours.

Re: Bimmer or mercedes??

None of the Kraut cars are any good anymore; the have degenerated to slick trick gadgets and build quality of the 1976 Dodge Dart!! My Fiat 500 is my hop around town car; the Bentley Turbo coupe is a real road car.

BMW and MB are a commoners car now; they used to be a country club car - now they can be found in the employee parking lot of every Wal Mart in Mississippi!!! lmao

Re: Bimmer or mercedes??

I'm strongly biased to Fiat only but after that it's definitely a Merc for me; more distinctive and without the image generated by BMW (and Audi) drivers.

I'm not familiar with the image of BMW and Audi drivers in mainland UK but here in N. Ireland they've a bad reputation; though I'm sure it a similar situation in England too. I rarely see an Audi or BMW keep a safe distance or use an indicator, I think indicators must be an optional extra on Audis that their owners are too tight to pay for.

About a year ago I saw a 7 series driver at the local Sprucefield Sainsbury's garage attempt to put air into a tyre using the water hose! He realised something wasn't quite right and then proceeded to refer to the handbook in the glovebox before giving up and driving away. You couldn't have made it up. Who are these people???!! What made this better was his wife and kids were in the car too so he must have really felt like a complete inadequate.

Lets not forget too about the sheer quantity of Audis and BMs parked sideways over two or even more carparking spaces, a common sight especially by X5s and A8s etc.

I think you're a bit out of date with that assessment. I have dealings with both Manchester United and City. The Range Rooney is still very popular among the kick-a-bag-o-wind players nowadays but Lamborghinis, Ferraris and AMG G-Wagens are typically the order of the day in the Premier League.

I think it's a lot down to Mr. Clarkson that the image of the Bentley Continental is quite low in the eyes of many. I've driven several (although none of them have been mine) and I found it a delightful thing. Whether W12 or V8, they go very, very well, are comfortable all the time and seem to be reliable.

As they get older they will keep on coming down in price, in fact there are a few on the market for around £25-30K which is new BMW 3-Series money.

3-Series motors are now more common than Mondeos and are quite widely ignored (except by those striving to have a bigger office and a designated space in the staff car park, yet the Bentley still attracts envious glances like few others. Although, in fairness, it probably attracts hate equal measure.

Someone, can't remember who now, said that BMWs were mainly bought by people who didn't know much about cars, in as much that they were a default choice for many people on the company car roster. They get a list of cars to choose from: Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Merc C-Class and don't know which one to get. But, they seem to remember that once, on Top Gear, Clarkson or Hammond or May said the 3-Series was great because it was so controllable that you could easily hold it in a power slide round any roundabout. What probably eluded them was the fact that the BMW in question was a M3, which is a very different proposition from the 318d they were offered.

Re: Bimmer or mercedes??

my new to me merc is pain in the arse, standard code readers dont connect to it. if you replace things like air filter maf map and so on they need to be introduced ( coded in) to the ecu using mercedes star diag ( like our examiner) but a clone version is £500 quid lot more then our mes. other £10k scanners can do it but not cheaper ones. my merc is a 2009 i am told newer ones are even worse with even headlights needing to be introduced.

wish fiat made a decent automatic van

Re: Bimmer or mercedes??

It would appear that all German cars are trading on past repuation for excellence. Nowadays their reliability is well below par and the build quality in general is nothing to be excited about either. A new Giulia is likely to be worth a look as is the now uncommon Mondeo. Both will have the measure of the Germans in most if not all areas. YMMV.

Has it got one of those thermos type devices behind the dash like BMW brought out with the E39 5 series? One of my diesel peeves that on a cold day unless you drive it like you stole it takes 10-15 miles before the heater works on a cold day rather than 1 mile..

i think it has electric coolant heater but not 100% sure, but its lovely, never used to have any heat in croma for ages but this is instant, also got heated seats for when it gets colder, shame every thing else on it falls to bits, took out a storage pocket today though to fix heater vent and found 2 £20 notes behind it not my lost ones but from a previous owner.

Was the previous owner a dealer?? (Of the recreational substance rather than automotive variety) Rather odd to be hiding money behind pieces of dash!

i think it might have just slipped behind there rather than been hidden, if it was hidden they would know it was there and took it out.

Re: Bimmer or mercedes??

In my opinion, both cars are great, they are exactly the same but different companies, same ranges, models classes, and so on, I think Mercedes-Benz produce a little bit more powerful engines than BMW in general, but BMW still has more eye catching designs in general, If I can afford to buy a model, it won't be either this or that, I love that exclusivity feeling, both cars are popular here as the main high-end luxury vehicles, I prefer to get a rarer competitor brand maybe a Lexus, Jaguar, Audi, Cadillac along with my main everyday car obviously a FIAT
