Here's a post I was avoiding making the past fortnight... But I've went ahead and made the switch. I mentioned a few weeks ago that I spotted a DS3 for sale near me that caught my eye and despite about a week or so of debating whether or not to buy it, it won me over in the end... Spelling the end of just over a year with my 2017 Fiat Panda Easy. Inside the year I did 16,000 miles and would have been well on track for 20,000 had it not been for lockdown. It has been a great little car and was a great step up from the last Panda, much more grown up feeling. I still think it's a quirky and stunning design (like nothing else you see, really) and that it's the best car in its class though not without its annoyances like anything.

I traded it in (poor idea, but I figured it would take me weeks to sell it and that cash used buyers wouldn't be about in their masses after lockdown) about two weeks ago for this 2017 DS 3 Prestige 1.6 BlueHDI which is a totally different machine in so many ways. I still think diesel is stupid in something as small as a car, and it's grossly overcomplex looking in the engine bay (I hope to learn to understand it as well as I did the simple 1.2 FIRE engine). But it is phenomenal in comparison to put the foot down on a long road with 120hp in a car not too much bigger than the Panda was (at least it doesn't seem to be much bigger). It's a lot less practical but it's smooth, quiet and quick enough. I know that the Panda will long outlive it due to its simplicity and proven engineering versus what's essentially a fancy Citroen lol This was 17,000 miles and £9k. I thought it to be a good deal, especially as NI car dealers seem to buy them over from the mainland and add anything from a grand to the price. It originated from somewhere in Wales with a CF prefix reg.

Anyway, the Panda will be missed. I will miss having a reason to post on here and I will miss the simplicity, utility and charm of the Panda and Fiat in general. But it's time to try something different. I could be back some day!!!

Thanks to everybody who has helped me out with my Panda's over the past six years since joining the forum. I've never come across another forum as good as this in any topic!

At least you do a decent mileage so DPF issues shouldn't be a big issue. I believe they are prone to clogging in the inlet tract after a few years and miles. I remember when I was repairing a Karcher pressure washer in Arnold Clark in Dundee a mechanic washing out a manifold on a fairly young DS3 diesel and telling me its a common issue. I was there about an hour and he was still busy. Fortunately it was a big dealership with four machines so he was able to work away at it.
The DS3 is a nice car so enjoy. Don't forget your friends here though.

I'm going to make a conscious effort to go on at least one long run per month, that'll involve 40 minutes of motorway (fourth gear, cruise control on) to blast whatever needs blasted out the back!!! Apparently if you forget to top up the AdBlue it can be really problematic. The dealer I bought it from had to get some work done at Citroen / DS dealer nearby before I could collect it to do with the AdBlue having not been topped up or something... i hope that wasn't a dead sign of a problem to come...

But in defence of the engine, 120hp is very different to 69hp!

And thanks, I would like to still run by some technical questions to some of you guys on here but would feel like I'm in the wrong place if it's not a Fiat / Italian motor per say!

You’ve purchased a non Fiat.....:D

Hell has frozen over!!!

Alfas are ok :p

I'll vouch for that! Still loving my Mito ?

That was a terribly short time with your Panda Shane.

And don't worry about the dpf. I think I would have had 16K done only for the lockdown. My normal drive to and from work (13 miles each way) was sufficient to keep the dpf happy. It was only after almost 3 months of not going more than 3 miles from home that the light appeared on my dash with the message telling me to keep driving. I thought I'd need to take a good run of around 40 miles, but after only 8 miles, the light went out and mine was happy again. I haven't seen it since. You'll be grand. I doubt if you'll get a light at all.

Health to drive.

I know, I was thinking I’d have it until it was at least ten years! I’m sure it’ll do somebody very well though!

That diesel engine is used by Ford, Citroen and Peugeot (and a few other makes too - likely now Vauxhall/Opel too) and made in a factory shared by Ford and PSA. My 2010 Volvo has a version of it. It has proved to be very reliable. It is rather shoehorned in under the bonnet and the various 'external bits' are scattered around in difficult-to-reach places -- on the Volvo you need to remove the whole air filter box and its 'plumbing' to reach to the oil filter. Driven longish runs often enough keeps the manifold, DPF and EGR clean, But it really does not like lots of round-town short trips. (True of most diesels though - my Panda 4x4 included). Enjoy it - it will be fun.

And I’ve gotten my first night of servicing to do. Typical dealer saying it’ll be serviced... I’m not sure if it’s a diesel thing, but the oil is black as night.... The cabin filter which is visible under the bonnet / wiper area is clearly grey / dirty.

So I decided to just order a trio of these MANN filters. The cabin filter in particular sounds impressive with some kind of fancy triple layer design. ‘Bio functional’ - stops diesel particulate, active carbon layer to prevent harmful gases getting inside and bio functional layer to stop mould and allergens. I’m not sure how I’ll ever actually know if it’s just marketing speak or if it’s actually working ... but it’s a change from the plain paper ones I’ve fitted to date.

And Herts Hillhopper, I watched a few videos on oil changes and I can confirm it looks awkwardly placed behind some air pipes that (hopefully!) will pop off easily for access. It’s one of these different filters too that isn’t a canister.

It’s so different!!!! I drove past the place and seen the Panda sitting. It’s in the background of the photos of new stock the dealer puts up, but not actually listed for sale .... my romanticised imagination says that someone must have saw it and offered to buy it as soon as it appeared thus it not needing to be listed ....... That, OR it’ll appear over in the mainland for sale somewhere near one of you.

The reg is BN17XLK so if any of you see the Panda for sale know that it was a fellow forum members car and looked after very well for the year I had it :)

People tell me they love the new car (you know how superficial my generation can be) compared to the Panda. But I still tell them the Panda is a far better looking, more practical and will be a longer lasting car than this by miles - albeit a cheaper and more functional one.

I have a feeling that when the odd ‘involved repair’ comes up with the DS I’ll be sorely missing the basic but proven engineering in the Panda versus what sounds like a messy, black oil filled game of Twister on this engine. But it’s a new challenge and a new learning experience

Thank you all so much, a million times, for all the advice and support with the Panda(s). I started off just a typical young guy with no clue or interest as such in cars or mechanics, and ended up having a pretty good idea how it all works and being above average in being able to approach even some pretty intensive repairs (timing belt, oil seals). Couldn’t have done it without this forum and I doubt I’ll find one as good for the DS online!!!

I think on pay day I owe this forum a donation :)

Thanks for the updates :)

Black oil ..it could be 1,000 miles old.. diesels carry SOOT in their oil ;)

Back in the 90's cars had PSA engines.. French tax laws made Derv mega popular..

( so they had development money)

But once FIAT got hold of mj tech.. it levelled the field

My son had an 02 2.0 307.. it was a nice place to sit.. he still misses that aspect

Ive dealt with a few french cars.. the Diesels are certainly Far better engineered.. :)
but all this Diesel emissions gubbins is an 'after thought'

Its not Goodbye

Its Au Revoir :)

Ah that's not so bad. I changed the oil in the Panda end of last year and it was only just turning from honey coloured to more on the brown side (never had truly black oil in the 2017 Panda) so that's reassuring to know about diesel engines. I noticed in the V5C it says fuel 'heavy oil' - bluntly put!

Didn't Fiat invent the common rail diesel engine? (Or did I pick that up wrong). To be fair, the FIRE engine seems to be well known around the internet to be so robust and bulletproof that it outlasted the bodywork of the cars they were in from the 80s and 90s!

I can't seem to find much info on the BlueHDI's as such, mostly the e-HDIs which I suspect is the same block without the AdBlue element. I find it strange how some companies like Mazda are giving AdBlue a miss whereas PSA and VAG seem to be wholeheatedly adopting it - maybe a European approach to solving diesels troubles?

I remember my dad had a 307 for a few years around 2014 (1.4 Petrol) and learning to drive in it. It was pretty smooth! And a friend with a high spec 308 around the same time with the fancy glass roof, also pretty comfortable car. Did most of my driving lessons in a diesel C3 (2000s style one) around Cheshire (Runcorn, Chester, Northwich) which was OK.

I reckon they've got nothing on the Italians though when it comes to making them look good... but I admired that the French weren't afraid to take design risks to look a bit more interesting (Cactus, anyone?!) lol

Also, thinking of doing a road trip to Galway this weekend. 180 miles south and 180 back... If that doesn't constitute 'a good run' that'll blow the crap out of the DPF then I don't know what does! :D

That looks good! I did the air filter and cabin filter today, easiest thing I’ve ever changed!!! Haven’t done the oil yet, but it’s quite pricey for some reason for this. Not sure whether to go with the 0W or 5W.

Worried that someone might have already used 5W so if I use 0W it could encourage leaks .. is this at all likely?!
