General 4x4 squealing rear brakes

General 4x4 squealing rear brakes

Used the car over the last 2 days and so far the fix has completely stopped the squeal. Hopefully that is the end of my saga. Good luck to everyone still trying to get theirs sorted and thanks to oyumurtaci for posting the PDF.

A quick search of the part number reveals this for an Italian forum
http://www.panda4x4.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=10895&start=210
Maybe Babbo Umbro could have a quick scan and get the jist of that?

Other than that. Here is the part available to buy

The topic is “Brakes that whistle in reverse”

In general the build up is that umpteen people had/have noisy brakes, mostly when reversing but in one case when braking going forwards on a curve. The gist is that there is an established solution, though the problem is annoying rather than dangerous.

Several messages, then turbopanda on Sunday 20 December 2015 (domenica 20 dicembre)

Mine has always wailed, since it was new, only that at the start it made it (the noise) going forwards, after braking on a bend. Now at a distance of one year and 12000 kilometres it made it increasingly and in reverse it was a concerto. I took it to the service and they were aware of the problem and knew what to do. They fitted two dampers on the rear calipers, the reference number on the bill is:

52025558 Damper

They told me that it involves two components, out of guarantee it would amount to 200 euros I believe.

Noise 100 per cent disappeared.

I’ve just read this topic.

From about one month my Cross also whistles and wails in reverse.

I was where I bought it and the mechanic said to me that it’s a common problem with all Fiat 4x4s. In practice it’s down to the rear pads that are worn and there’s nothing much to be done …..

But now I read that it’s sufficient to fit these dampers to solve the problem. What should I do? Return to the dealer and give him the reference number and oblige him to fit them?

Give me some advice also because, apart from this, my little Panda is a force of nature.

If you go to the dealer with your guarantee reference number they have to mount it for you - otherwise the guarantee is inactive and it costs.

Thanks Trapper(jack)

In less than a month I have the first service and I’ll see if they’ll also do this work.

Hello, I am new to the forum but not a new owner of a Panda 4x4. I have a Cross bought in December 2014 that after one month began to behave like a red arrow (express train) braking for a station. I immediately went to the dealer who immediately told me that it was normal and that after a while it would disappear. Obviously he was lying, knowing that he was lying I returned after a week (I didn’t have the time) after I’d read on the forum and somewhat angry I told him what I thought of them and the marque they were representing. Moral: 4 dampers under guarantee and the problem resolved. I ask myself how come they always have to try it on and annoy people anyway. Ba.

My own 4x4 TA is due a service prior to its first MoT so I’ll see what Vospers in Exeter have to say about this.

Hi there, been reading this thread as my 14 plate 4x4 brakes make noise while reversing, it's in main dealer for so called dampers fitting today.

I provided my dealer with the detail kindly provided by our Turkish friend(y)

They still say there's no TSB. The only brake related TSB is to do with erroneous ESC warning lights:confused:

Not sure where to go now(n)

In Turkey, the dealer network (Birmot) is also the importer and direct sales representative of Fiat. As such, they have direct access to Fiat's online technical system. His explanation seemed to imply that other than Turkey, Italy and possibly India, other countries have separate entities for dealers and the actual Fiat corporation. As such, my guess is the dealer isn't contacting the proper channels to reach the service bulletin, and need to either call Fiat Technical, or log onto the online technical system and look for the parts numbers. There was, for example, no official service bulletin published for Turkey, and only after contacting Fiat Technical and reaching someone in Italy did they get to the damper kit. So basically even though our Fiat dealers are actually Fiat themselves, they're really disconnected from the whole process, and need to keep asking higher-ups to get anywhere.

I am trying to work out how to post the images from my phone grrrrr

Got mine done today.

Again, they describe it as a brake damper kit but no part number

I have taken a photo of the new bit in place - once photobucket is back up, I will upload it.

I've emailed Fiat Customer Service this morning as the dealer say the can't act upon info from a forum / OC.

Fingers crossed!!

I find Fiat Customer Care pretty useless tbh. When I was trying to get my stop start fixed, Fiat would call me to see how satisfied I was with the progress. My answer was "Not very, the dealer will not give time to diagnose the problem as it's intermittent, because Fiat will not pay them for that time"
His reply was "well they must take time to diagnose"
Me "but you won't pay the labour"
Fiat "but they must diagnose"
and so on and on

I suggested that they send someone from FIAT UK to take a look, no they wont. I suggested Fiat send a loan car for me, no they won't.
Just go back to the dealer they kept saying.

Stalemate.

I'm hoping we will make progress with these brakes. Maybe the next suggestion to our dealer is for them to call the service dept of one of the success cases, to ask their warranty claim person how exactly they went about claiming?

You couldn't let us know which dealers you use please?

Collected Panda today, paperwork just shows alternator replaced and new dampers fitted to rear brakes. Fiat really don't want to let anyone know the part or Tech bulletin numbers by the look of things. I'll be using the car for work over next 3 days so will report if the squealing brakes are resolved. My only advice to others with the rear brake issue is to insist the dealer raises a request with Fiat Technical, don't just accept a strip down and clean by the dealer themselves.

EDIT: I see Palmers of Watford reading back a few pages, thanks

My 4x4 has gone in this morning and the problem has been confirmed by dealer who has ordered dampening kit, shame Fiat technical are insisting on turning it into a two day task.

Exactly the same here. Serviced yesterday, mentioned noisy brakes reversing, they checked with Fiat, Fiat approved the fix, they've ordered the damper kit and I'll need to go back next week.

Dealer I used was Motorparks at Preston, they are on the dock area, I believe they have now done a couple more since mine was sorted. Just over a week now and everything seems good, no noise what so ever.
