I promised photos and never got around to posting them so here we go.....my DIY pods with Cliff Designs 13cm (5.25") coax speakers.
1st photo shows overall view with cutout for the corner of the dash and shows speaker mounted on inside of the MDF. They are mounted on the inside as the tweeter sticks out further than the edge of the woofer cone.
2nd photo shows overall view with acoustic cloth cover (secured with superglue)
3rd photo shows close up view of the dash cutout and acoustic cloth
4th photo shows framework on passenger side with cross brace (Think theres one at the bottom too) and acoustic cloth on the side of the MDF panel. Secured with the original mounting hole and screw.
Comments: i cut the side panels so that they're tight against the fabric all the way around. The original pods have a big gap underneath which doesn't help the performance of the speakers. However making them tight against the cloth caused a big headache when i tried to get them in! I dropped the fabric section which allowed me to get them in but then i had big problems putting the screws back in to hold the fabric section up (Drilled holes through mdf and screwed back in with a short screwdriver)
So, it wasn't easy but i probably have one of the best panda stereos out there! Looking at adding a cheapish oldschool amp now.
If anyone wants some more pics i'll be happy to get some although i won't be taking anything apart to get more pics!
Ben
