i have 2 999 fire engines, neither will idle. i have tried running them with points, electronic ignition, cleaned carb, replaced carb, replaced ignition advance, ajusted ignition timing, cleaned and set pugs, switched rotor arm and distributor, inspected cam, adjusted cam timing, fited an electric fuel pump, cut the end of my solenoid and used bad language. the symptom remains more or less the same engine will run with lots of revs or full choke. which makes me think its a fuel problem. next i will replace my ht leads, pray for divine intervention or look for a diesel engine i can slap in there

1. Air leak past the carb?
2. Poor engine earth, which can result in weak spark.

Have you got all 3 hoses plugged on the back of carb base?

Diesel engine you say? let me know if you find one, after my recent water crossing issue I'm researching and checking various options.
The 1.7TD seems to be no.1 for now.

Fuel lines perishing and dropping crap into the idle jet. Look at the line from filter to pump, then pump to carb.
That's what mine was anyway. Flexi fuel pipe seems to last about 5 minutes these days:mad:

my first carb was rigorously cleaned the second was of e bay i didn’t touch it but behaves exactly as the first did. i will strip and clean it. the 3 hose connectors are connected. perhaps i will inspect the intake manifold i only have one as as my other manifold is for bosch spi.

this page is useful https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-classic/165471-running-problem-3.html
I now know where the idle jet is i had been concentrating my efforts around the idle cut off solenoid area.
I added an extra earth, more carb cleaning and adjustment and my engine runs just the same. manifold will need taking off now.

About that diesel engine how about a 2 cylinder air cooled Lister, would need to make a hole in the wing for the startin handle

diesel engine cancelled. i striped of the manifold cleaned of old gasket and sealant and resealed with silicone. cleaned the earth and live connections while i was in there. car runs half normal. now i have to fix everything else.
