Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
Wow! Looks even better than I'd imagined! Even the doors look ok
Can't wait to see it when you've finished, you've done great work in PTP so far bringing it back to standard so Engelbert is in good hands (y)

Here's a photo of it when it did the Italy trip years back, I just remembered the last owner had sent it to me last year

Thanks! I was sent a copy of this photo too, but the one you have posted seems to be higher res, so I will replace my photo :) It took me ages to guess the numberplate :ROFLMAO:

Loving the cats thinking - "what's occurring here"£?
"There's some bloke pushing a new bit of play equipment on to our drive"!!

They were excited to see it once we let them outside :)

I wish my 2WD was in as good condition and I've been working on her for a year (on and off!).
Well done Cameron!
You will be joining the rest of us in the neighbours: "how many cars does he need on his drive?" club soon enough!

I think my immediate neighbours have given up! Each side is "normal" but 2 doors up he has about 6 cars (only the 2 old Jags are worth noting), and a couple of doors down have a large garage full of military truck/Jeep/bikes plus a couple of other cars. I don't really feel abnormal in the middle, which is nice! (y)

I am quite lucky to have a big driveway, my neighbours will be getting worried as I have 3 now and counting! (2 pandas and my missus's Kia Cerato)

Thats quite nice! At least you are not the only one on the street with a lot of cars :)

Floppy gearsticks are pretty common, it is the bushes in the linkage that need replacing, never had to change any myself but I think they are still available.

I'm very impressed watching your video, I was expecting it to be much worse than it seems to be. Get those rear wheel arch liners out and have a really good poke around the back end of the sills and the boot floor/inner wing seam to make sure they are solid, thats the first place it will go so if its ok there the rest shouldn't be too bad.

That was my thoughts too :) it needs a damn good coat of underseal but so far I havent found anything that worries me :)

Well I wasn't expecting this thread for a year or so! Nice one Cameron. (y)

Looks pretty solid too. Can I recommend that you don't cover any of the rust you treat with underseal. Treated rust always comes back regardless of the brand of products you use and underseal will allow this to happen unseen.

Treat it and paint it by all means but either stop there or use an underbody wax on top, then you will be able to see when it needs doing again.

Underseal/stone chip is for new painted metal only.

Hi Vern, I wasn't expecting this for a year or so either but I was lucky to get the opportunity of this one.

Thanks for the tip on the underseal :)

Parked the car up in the garage today to keep it dry and to keep the windows open to allow it to ventilate!

I took the rear seats out with a view to inspecting underneath that section of the body, thankfully all is good there, though after lifting the sound proofing inside the boot there was a little more rust under there than I previously thought, though nothing that worries me too much, though obviously welding will be required. The rear seats are in my office just now and have come up very nicely after cleaning :)

There was a puddle underneath the rear seat inside the car which I am putting down to condensation since the car has sat for the last 5 years. PTP had something similar, so not worried. The rubber mat stopped it getting to the metal :) Oh and the gear linkage bushes came, must be the quickest postage Ive ever had on ebay! :)

All the usual places mate - but as it has been said, it's in remarkable condition due to the circumstances! Good work man

Thanks man, the enormity of the task could freak me out a little if I thought about the sum total of work and effort required, but I'm just trying to plan one job at a time and do it that way :)

Checked the oil and coolant today and its completely dry of both, think the oil was lost during transportation though as there was a puddle left on the transporter after it was unloaded. And I think the radiator is the problem regarding coolant as there is crystallisation occurring at the edges or the radiator. Had a similar problem when I got PTP so it will probably mean replacing the radiator, which isn't very difficult :)

I am enjoying the challenge and learning new things :)

So found more rust on the inner sill area which will require welding, not so bad though. Treated some rust inside the boot and tailgate and will paint it tomorrow. Removed the cam cover, all looks in good order under there. Though broke the braided hose on the fuel pump side so will need a new hose there, it was pretty worn with age and broke when trying to remove to inspect the fuel pump.

I'm just taking things slowly and tackling one job at a time, could probably do with prioritising better but that isn't my strong point.

So when are you buying a MIG welder :D. One of us, one of us!

So the video below is the second in my progress log, shows me using kurust on the tailgate and inside boot area and painting with Hammerite (Till I get Verde Tropico, thought it best to prevent any further rusting, and as previously discussed this will not be a show car, I figured since it was on the inside of the car it didnt matter too much, I am not going to be using it on the outside of the car though.)

It also shows the rust damage to the drivers side inner sill, does anyone have an opinion on this? How difficult/Best way to repair etc?

Cameron - you've got a real find there. It looks very sound indeed, and great that it's in such good hands. Well done you (and well done the seller too). Will look forward to seeing progress but all looks very positive. (y)

Am intrigued by the computerised rust control unit!!

Ahhh - forgot to say... don't wire this is up to your new battery when you get it. It will drain it flat in an hour! It's american, so I think for a 24v battery but you could attach it to a leisure battery. Works on a similar principle to electro-plating, I believe...

Thanks, I removed it completely yesterday though :) I knew the car had electrical problems so I wanted to eliminate that as a possible cause :)
