Been off road, and can't now select reverse or fifth gear

Out of the two rods from gear selector to the gearbox the offside one has got a bit of a curve to it. Not normal I don't think, and could be the cause of the problem?

When trying to select either lost gear the drivers seat is in the way. Can enguage first to fourth ok.

Selecting first is now where third should be, so its all shifted over a tad to the right

Any idea's please.

Jon.

crash it over something the opposite way you did the damage :D

Not nominating you mate, anyone who goes offroad has the odd problem or two - I've driven home from Salisbury with 3 foot of my exhaust in the boot

If the selector is curved wouldn't it be effectively shortened ?

Do you not have a spare gearbox for a 4x4 in your massive parts bin ? (thinking of a raid for parts)

Is the gearbox still mounted correctly ?

Jon. Both rods should be dead straight. Even a slight curve in one of them would mess up the geometry of the gearchange. Straightening/changing the rod should sort the problem, assuming you haven't done any other damage. You'll have to get under the car to get the bent rod off anyway so make sure you check all the other gearchange components while you're there. Should be an easy one to sort, this. Good luck with it.

Right, got back, top speed of fifty in forth, will leave it until tomorrow and take out the bent bar and perswade it to turn straight (sig anyone?) and then see if it helps. Was going to do it where we were off roading but didn't want to get stranded and tow by a landy thirty miles back to college digs.

Just by chance the only bits I've got still at college from the donor are the gear linkages so may swap (but knowing my luck 2wd and 4wd are different?)

As soon as I read that I thought, "bent selector rods." They're quite exposed.

As has been said they should be straight. I expect yours will have a big scuff mark at the middle of the bend to boot!

Take them off bend them straight (shouldn't need heat), fingers crossed you should be all good (y)

Any news on the wee beastie Jon ?

Not really. Still no reverse or fifth. Not even looked at the poor girl. Had a field trip this morning and a Materials Science exam this afternoon followed by a shift at work in the college kitchens, so I've had no time to tend to her, and she's only done 2 miles today to and from college.

Will sort it in the daylight tomorrow.

Have checked the rods from donor Panda though and can confirm that they should be straight

Lol.

Jon.

seems a bit odd having rods, exposed, on a 4x4 panda. has anyone ever looked at fitting the stick from the cinquecento? i know the box won't be 100% the same, but if you swapped this into it;

and then got the selector mech mounting bracket off the cinquecento, ta-da - you'd have cable change, and no risk of bent rods again.
