Right, noticed yesterday that there is some oil around the bottom of the breather pipe, where it is clipped on to the rocker cover. The breather pipe is split, but still hold well enough.. but surely the should not be any oil there anyway.. I was at the understanding that it was purely to release the fumes and they then get sucked in and burnt in the engine.

Is it just a case of the hot oil bubbling up and spitting out the rocker cover and then seeping out the slipt pipe?

Ta, Craig

I think it could be two problems:
- engine is worn...
- that is block....there is some kind of filter inside which could be blocked :(
take it off and check inside....then you can wash that filter and put it back

Only leaking oil from the breather pipe..... you're not trying hard enough;) My Panda leaks oil from many places .

Seriously though, I don't think this is cause for concern, as under the cover the rockers are splashing oil around and common for some to end up in the breather pipe. It sounds like you are only seaping oil because the pipe is split, best get it bodged...., I mean replaced :D

There should be a wire flame trap inside that breather pipe. If the pipe is to be renewed, please do not discard the trap.

Yep it is Luke.. I haven't yet figured out how you cant have over head cams... Sure one of you oldies will explain:p

Cam runs in a housing off the crankshaft which actuates 8 pushrods that in turn push the rockers up which then push the valves down... more moving parts... not as efficient... should be a diagram in the Haynes or Porter manual that explains it... interesting stuff though.

Cheers, Luke. (y)

It does not matter where inside the pipe the trap is located, just as long as it is in there.

Its only a bit of gauze...push it out with a screwdriver...only half my lot actually have it. As tom says oil will always splash up inside and sometime get into the filter box. I just clean the pipe and box every now and then being its a 5min job...
