Good afternoon,

My girlfriend just bought a restored Fiat 124 coupe over the weekend and we have a slight technical issue. The issue being my knowledge rather than the car. The steering wheel is fairly mangled up so we bought an Autotechnica steering wheel. Autotechnica only makes adapter/boss kits for the 124's from 1972 on. Can anyone tell me if these models are compatible? She loves the wheel because it is actually a good match for the rest of the interior however with no kit I may as well sticky tape it to the current on for all the good it will do.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Very early 124's are indeed different, as they have a solid steering column (as opposed to the uni jointed collapsible column of later cars) and also the early models use a different wiper/indicator stalk switch .... this is probably what will cause you fitment issues.... the '72on boss kit may actually work but you might lose the self cancel on the indicators and the horn function

The complete solution (a convoluted one) would be to retro fit the later steering column and stalk switch assembly from a later car, and then the later (72on) steering wheel boss would definitely work and so would the self cancel and the horn.

The trouble then will be which steering box you have... as there are several models/types, and the steering column assemblies vary depending (ie long or short steering box input shaft length) on this.

Nowadays the secondhand parts needed may be difficult to come by in the UK as well, altough the USA is a very good source of secondhand parts as there are still quite a few 124 spyders around over there.

If you have the solid type column it would be a good saftey move anyway to change to the collapsible type...should you ever have a serious crash in the car.

The (68) car should have a short shaft steering box, so you will need a 3 piece steering shaft to suit the short shaft box, the BC/BS stalk switch assembly, column shroud covers and a bit of patience to fit it all in before you go mounting the steering wheel.
