they are terribly cars, the bulk heads rust and have to be replaced
Due to your young age you are going to need a trailer test to tow your horse box, the trailer and burple are ok, provided you get the right weight of car.
Something Vectra sized is where you need to be and all 'modern' vehicles are not easy to repair. They are designed to be easy to put together, not easy to take to bits.
Very non Fiat, but something like a Forester (Turbo if you want to go really quick), fits that balance between 4x4 and not too heavy. I know your dad's kinda exploded, but a full service history and preventative maintenance does allow these to do astronomical mileages.
Non turbo's are dead easy to work on, turbos a little more difficult, but not impossible, not that I am volunteering.

Why the diesel?
Ooo didnt know it was a focus in drag, what does that mean to the car? ie less reliable etc?
dunno about price range, but what about the civic, the model before the current one? theres some powerful models of them about
