Following up my previous reply: I just remembered about the remote start feature, which may not be available in some European countries.

It used to be illegal here in the UK. Not sure if it still is, with autonomy creeping in.

I am not sure it's outright illegal to have auto start. One of those grey area things like HIDs. You can install aftermarket auto start which I don't think is against the law.

Going back just over 10 years, I knew someone who installed auto start on their car. An old 80s Fiesta of all cars and I had no idea this was even possible. Long story short, the guy showed off his new toy, got in his running car and forgot something. He left the key in the car and leapt out for a few seconds but in shutting the door, it locked. So he was stuck with a chavvy noisy Fiesta (it had all sorts of Halfords crap on it which I believe is where he purchased the auto start) just running on the yard at work. He never did it again, as a workforce of 50 odd men found it all too amusing!

Personally, I'd be warier of the new breed of ultra dictatorial council who are introducing byelaws for just about everything. Some, particularly in London, will fine you heavily for having a running car at the side of the road for more than a few seconds.

Well we took delivery of an ex-demo 170BHP 1.4 Cross Plus auto and the fuel consumption is frankly appalling @ c.29 MPG - whilst I don't believe manufacturers figures for one minute I expected north of 35 for pottering about. Even the CVT 1.2 Micra it replaced gave us 40. only 4k up at the moment so taking some comfort in the hope that it will improve with age....

9 speed auto is a bit daft as well with hindsight - 2 or 3 too many IMHO....

I have the 9 speed auto on a 2.0 Multijet. 7, 8 and 9 are all more like overdrives really and are used differently depending upon Mode. In Auto Mode it almost never uses first and in Sport Mode seldom visits 9th. I've had it for 18 months now and loving it. As the changes are so smooth I frequently have to look to see which gear is actually engaged.

I'm thinking maybe I should have gone for the diesel which from what you've said has an engine better suited to a 9 speed box perhaps

I'm also very content with the 9 speed automatic gearbox. It basically allows you to keep the highway speeds around 2000 RPM all the time. But sometimes it just "forgets" to switch for such extended periods of time that I have to resort to manual mode.

Consumption wise, definitely. I get better than 45mpg easily with a best of 51. There are the diesel issues obviously but I won't be changing this car for quite a while yet

Is that petrol or diesel ?

Manual mode is a piece of cake with the 'flappy paddles'

You mean the steering wheel gear changer? I didn't know these cars had such an option. Or maybe you are speaking generally?

No, I have them fitted to my 500x, one up one down. Not that I use them very often, but very simple if you think the car should have shifted but hasn't

Hello, thread revival time!

Just wondering what current experience is like with the 1.6? There is a lovely one for sale nearby at a good price, but I am used to having Fiats with the 1.2 8v delivering more or less the stated MPG.

I could live with late 30s in terms of MPG but low 30s would be pretty dire. Any thoughts welcome!

I had one for two years and got 36-37mpg overall. That's with a 50 mile round commute on dual carriageway and motorway. I thought it was a really nice engine, more than adequate for the car. For comparison, I replaced it with a 500 1.2 this year and I get 50mpg with the same driving pattern.

I'm in no place to financially make the move but I do like the Jeep Renegade which is built on the 500X production line. It would have to be 4x4 of course because I'm a tart.

Thanks for that, very helpful. That doesn't sound too bad to be honest.

50mpg was always reachable in our old 1.2 500s and Panda, so it seems like mid to high 30s would be doable in the 1.6 500X.

Will only know if we give it a try though!

Best I ever got from my 500X 1.4 was about 45, normally mid to high 30s. I've got a Hyundai i30 Fastback now, similar power from its 1.4 turbo petrol, but about 5 mpg better - probably just as well Fiat pensioned off the old 1.4 Multiair. All time record was at the weekend, when I got 53mpg coming back from south west England, with a strong south westerly wind! I think the 500X would probably have got high 40s - nice upright back to act as a sail!

I've got a 500x 1.6 diesel with 50k miles and my consumption is averages around 47 mpg.

I've seen it do a bit better when I'm careful or going too slow. Overall I'm satisfied with the 1.6 diesel engine.
