Hi. 54 Plate 1.9 JTD with 66,000 on the clock.

A week or so ago lost power a couple of times but ran okayish until yesterday.

Keeps losing power and running badly. Have cleaned out the EGR which needed it to say the least but this has not fixed the problem.

Engine dies and is then difficult to start - and when it does lots of diesel smoke.

I have noticed a valve with a push arm on the inlet manifold, which when pushed gives the same symptoms - anyone know what this valve is? It seems to activate when the engine is cut and makes a popping noise - never noticed it previously.

Any advice and help with this problem will be greatly appreciated. Promise to post the final problem and fix when I know what it is!

Can confirm that the turbo and head gasket all seem fine.
Thanks to you all

In a Petrol engine, you stop it by switching off the ignition (i.e. stopping the supply to the ignition system).

On a Diesel, you obviously don't have that option, so you have to cut the fuel supply instead.
Not sure (I'm no diesel expert by a long way), but I think some diesels also have an inlet (air) shutoff.
The Valve you mention will most likely be the Fuel shut-off.

I presume there are no warning lights, or messages on the display?
Also, have you checked the Air Filter?
66,000 miles isn't much for a diesel, but you could check the diesel filter as well, you may have picked up some contaminated fuel somewhere, or fuel with a lot of water in it.

Lastly, it may be worth running some Injector cleaner through the system, a clogged injector would give those symptoms.

Thanks so far. I guessed the valve may have been the fuel cut off but thanks for helping me confirm.

Air filter and fuel filter replaced less than 2,000 miles ago and have checked them. Filled up after the first bout of problems and included an injector cleaner.

I see form the service records that the crankshaft sensor was replaced about 4,000 miles ago - just wonder if it is playing up-will be checking the connector today.

There are no warnning lights other than the coil indicating failure of a glow plug. Starts okay so wont be meddling with them yet.

Off out in a while to have another tinker so will post any findings later.

Had exactly the same symptom as you have had, cleaned the egr valve out made no difference, put new one on solved the problem, egr valve was faulty, hope this has helped

Thanks BikeDoc and mcornell.

tearing my hair out and there was not much to start with.

Have replaced two glowplugs which has cleared the annoying warning light, but as suspected made not a jot of difference to the problem.

On the basis that a clean of the egr valve made no difference for you mcornell but replacing it did, I will try that. Will order one now.

Am running out of options before having to send it off to the garage - which will no doubt be a bit expensive.

Will report back in a couple of days with an update.

Love this forum!

Right - problem fixed.

Sorry for the delay with replying. Been busy and awaiting delivery of THE part.

Well it was the EGR valve. The solenoid was not functioning properly, which was not clear from cleaning it. Bought the part from Fiat - £139.76 plus vat and a one year warranty.

Mcornell - you are a star and thanks for giving me the heads up.

Will keep on the forum, for help advice and whatever comes up.

Cheers all

glad to help, it was doing my head in on my car and your symptoms were exactly the same as mine

May have paid a little too much, but got £48 back, when I returned the old unit - made it a little better! Did not realise it was an exchange part until I looked at the receipt. Dohhhhhh.

Straight away the fuel economy has improved - by 4mpg. Perhaps it has been faulty since I got the car.

How much!!!

EGR for the JTD is the same as the Vauxhall/Opel Vectra C platform models. Vauxhall charge £67.00 inc VAT.

That's an interesting one, FFF. I've had a look at part numbers to see what cross referencing I could find.

The Fiat parts numbers given for the egr on my 04 roundnose are 46785766; replaced by 55182482; replaced by (do you get the feeling Fiat were having problems with these things? :D) 55204235; replaced(?) by 55215029.

The last is the interesting one. The Vauxhall part number for the Vectra C egr is 55215032 - very, very similar to the Fiat part number. Looking at the photos of the two, I think the only difference is the relative positions of the electrical connector and the gasketed face for the valve. On the Vauxhall item, both are facing in the same direction; for the Fiat one they are 90 degrees out of alignment. As the electrical (solenoid) section is held to the valve body by 4 bolts on the same PCD, and I know from taking mine apart that there are no indexing pins or dowels, I see no reason why you couldn't take a 55215032 apart (only 4 screws to remove) and put it back together to make a 55215029. If you see what I mean....

I also pondered whether there are yet other cars that use a 55215030 and 55215031, the only difference being the solenoid is assembled in 90 degree step rotations. Perhaps I should take my anorak off and sit in a darkened room for a while.:nutter:
