General Rear subframe ??

If you look at the above (with IE preferably) you will see that it comes with very little and costs circa £300.

Thanks for that Peat. It's a pity that Fiat don't sell the bushes separately. Do you know of any other bushes that will fit this subframe? There was talk a few months ago that some of the Alfa and Vauxhall bushes may be compatible, but nobody has confirmed this?

Sorry I don't.
I too saw the comments on a Vauxhall having bushes that would do the job, but after spending some time searching the web (I'm retired & have nothing better to do :) ) I did not find anything of use. Perhaps the person that made the comments in the first place could enlighten us?

Subframe front bush alternatives

I just thought it fair to offer my finding in correcting the rear subframe front rubber bush failure.

The fault identified it's self as a deep knock from the rear suspension most noticeable on rough roads as apposed to the sleeping policeman style hump. The metalastic mounting on the forward of the rear subframe had corroded away not a great desing it has to be said by Fiat.

As you may already know Fiat don't want to sell these bushies preffering to sell a complete subframe £450 ish, however, as stated by others there are alternatives. I obtained the rear subframe bush for the Vauxhall Vectra Part number 90496618, there are two different one on the Vectra rear subframe the other 90496721 although a better fit in the remaining hole in the Multipla subframe doesn't offer the spacing necessary to keep the subframe and chassis far enough apart. I used the 90496618, I had to machine 0.5 mm the aluminium casing of the bush and fabric and appropriate puller, also the rebound washer that sits under the bush will need spacing with a few washers just to enable a gap to stop vibration transfer. I think either of these part numbers would offer a good repair and are worth a try. I managed to replace both without having to remove the subframe.

Job done.

Good luck

Hi Brilh,

Thanks for the update. Your findings/approach sound really interesting and I am sure that a good few members on the forum will want to try it!

I guess it is too late now for any photos of your approach but could you upload a simple cartoon/diagram of how the bush fitted, where the washers went etc to help less mechanically experienced numpties like me have a go in the future? Maybe this could even be turned into a sticky/guide as part of the DIY workshop manual that the forum is pulling together?

cheers
Mark

This has been my successful way of replacing the multipla rear subframe bushes on my 52 plate:

I purchased quantity of 2x part number 90496681 - two rear subframe bushes - for the Vauxhall Vectra from a very kind and helpful chap called Albert @ Vauxhall Car Parts (01562 731442).

My mechanic had to machine about 1.5 mm of the aluminium casing of the bushes as well as the fabric and appropriate puller.

The rebound washer that sits under each of the bushes will need spacing with a few washers just to enable a gap to stop vibration transfer.

My mechanic managed to replace both without having to fully remove the subframe.

With labour (including the machining of bushes etc.), parts (2x 90496681 bushes) and vat, both bushes were replaced by my mechanic for £90!!!

This shouldn't fail...if your subframe itself is fine, DO NOT go to FIAT and pay £500 just for parts = £980 including labour!

FIAT ARE RIPPING OFF CUSTOMERS BY NOT MAKING SEPARATE BUSHES AVAILABLE TO THE MOTOR TRADE & THE GENERAL PUBLIC...!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE FROM A VERY PLEASED OWNER...

....MY SINCERE THANKS TO FORUM USER "BRIHL" FOR MAKING US ALL AWARE OF THIS GREAT WAY OF REPAIRING! :D

Here is link to the part needed for Fiat Multipla rear subframe bushes:

http://www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk...681&PN=Ready_for_SPP.html#a90496681#a90496681

Remember you need to purchase two - one for each side[/U of the car...

Thanks for the info. Could you confirm something please?

As you are aware there are a total of 4 rear subframe bushes on the Multipla. Are these the large ones to the rear of the vehicle or the front smaller ones? I am assuming the larger rear ones. Thanks.

It was the rear on mine I believe that had failed but i shall double check with my mechanic & come back to you to confirm :)

Rear subframe bushes.

Some of you may be following this topic...

I went down to my local Allparts branch (they're nearly always my first choice for parts) to see if they had the 90496681 bushes.
They didn't, nor did they have the 90496721.
A 15 second walk took me into the local Vauxhall dealer parts dept, they didn't have the 90496681 either, but did have the 90496721, 2 of them, on the shelf, result!
A quick measure at the counter, and I bought them.
£64 all-in, so not too horrendous...

Just off to the Lathe now to turn the housing down a little.

Edit; Damn it! Spoke too soon, knew it was too good to be true.
Took the other one out of the packet (labelled 90496721), and it seems the one that wasn't in a wrapper is the 90496681.
It has 90496721 hand written on it, but it's different.
It slips into the subframe with about .5mm clearance, and is shorter at the top.
The overall height is the same, but the whole metal bore section is lower by approx 5mm.

Right.
Managed to pick up another 90496681 from another Allparts branch.
The p/n is TD544W
It's a Delphi part, and there's another p/n on the box, TJ40E.

Surely (seeing as Fiat don't sell the bushes) a new subframe comes with the mounting bushes?

Do you have a link to the Brava bushes?
Model, year, etc?

3mm? Is that take 3mm off the diameter of the 'body'?

The Vectra ones are a bit cheaper (£32 each from Vauxhall or £25-ish for pattern parts)

Too late for me now, but there will be others who need the info.
Thanks.

I thought that the Firstline bushes FSM2026 (front of subframe) and FSM2029 (rear of subframe) were supposed to do the job? Albeit they need a bit of a skim down like BikeDoc has shown.

I haven't looked recently, but both of these could be had for around £60/pr off ebay not long ago.

That looks to be a bit shorter than the Multi or Vectra one(s), if it's a picture of the actual part of course.
Would probably be OK as long as you didn't regularly load your Multi to the limit.

There must be others that are suitable too, but with so few places listing the dimensions (if any), and a lot that use generic/library pictures, it's difficult to find them.
From the searching I did, it looks like some Peugeot and BMW models might be usable too.

I also e-mailed a couple of the poly-bush makers to see if they had a chart/list of all the bushes they make, with sizes.
No reply as yet.
