:( Well this car is starting to cost a lot of money now.Just replaced the clutch, and front brakes and discs, front drop links and anti roll bar bushes, and 2 front tyres, thought it would sail through mot.
 Failed rear offside shock absorber and both front macpherson struts has excessive movement at the upper attachment.Done the rear shock but dont have a clue whats needed for front ,even the mot station can not say, only that there is movement at upper attachment.
Any body had the same problem and know how to fix it,there is a upper spacer and shim both are £40 each. When i phoned fiat they said they have hardly sold any,so not sure if the problem lies there.HELP :worship::worship::worship:

Hear we go again, photo's:D

There is a top mount bearing on all shock absorbers and they can cause a knocking sound on loose terrain , what sort of movement is there? ill ask a guy i know if it is really an mot failure as it seems strict to me.
There is a company who supply them for various cars ( alfa 155's i know of) and its a poss they could do for the multi they are called KYB they do shocky's an bits as well . They are a better product than most standard fit jobbies.
Your gonna have to take the whole shock assembly out to do them im afraid.
Although in one peice i think (springs are supposed to be a pig to remove on these).

 Been looking at the net for a price on the kyb front suspension mounting kit, £113 per side, must be wrong .My kyb rear shock was only £25.

Rear shocks are cheap, my old alfa 155 uses the same rear shocks as the multi so i kept the spares when i sold it;)
fronts are a different matter.

Managed to get front suspension front strut mounting kit for £40 a side. Not much of a problem dropping the front suspension, but a pain getting the springs out to do the job.
Just started one side, the old top rubber mount had split in two,my old coil spring tool not so good. The thread on them is not brill,so having trouble getting the spring pressed down to refit. They need pressing down quite a lot to refit, give it another go today nearly there, otherwise i will have to buy a new coil tool.

:D One side done and the other side stripped waiting for parts which i am picking up latter.Spent some time cleaning the threads on my coil tool, worked a treat this time.
It will be back together tonight ready for mot tomorrow, boy never had a car which needed so much work doing at once.Clutch, front discs and pads, front drop links, anti roll bar bushes,2 front tyres, rear shock, and both front suspension top mounts and bearings.

Apart from the top and bottom wishbones and cambelt replacement as with any car the 156 should be no problems, unless you bought a sillyspeed:D.

Yes but it will be spot on when your done:) Ive just recieved my rear suspension frame from the bay for £20 retail price £460:D:D:D:D.
Plan on buying some rear trailing arms and building the whole thing from scratch off the car then taking all the old off in one go then re fitting with the new one.

Hi

Sorry to re-ignite this thread, but I have both of the shock strut tops to replace, and am having a real struggle getting the nuts at the end of the shock off. I have partially rounded one of the allen bolts in the middle of the shock shaft. Do I need to release the pressure of the spring with my spring compressors? All I wanted to do was release the tightness of the nut before clamping the spring down, to avoid wrestling with a loaded spring! Should it be possible or not?

Secondly, as I think I might end up with the grinder, does anyone know what size the nut is?

Cheers

James

Mine were the same , i had to hammer a ribe fitting instead of the allen type to grip it in the end, be carefull with the compressors though o had one shoot off , very bad springs to clamp up.

Hi

Thanks for the response, although I was hoping for a "it's quite an easy job" response!!! I knew deep down though that it would be like you say. Many thanks for the info. I have a set of stilsons to clamp onto the big serated washer that sits below the big nut to give the leverage required that the allen key and fitting cannot.

Cheers
James
