I cannot get my pla into 4th gear. All others are fine and was hoping someone could give me some insight into why just the one gear would fail like this and whether it is an indication of further problems if I continue to drive before getting it fixed.

Thanks

Our Multipla has also suffered from not going into 4th gear, also 2nd was difficult, if we held the gear lever down when driving it was OK but as soon as you let go of the gear stick it would jump out of gear. Drove for about a fortnight like this and then fault disappeared, happened again about six months later, again for about a fortnight, touch wood the problem hasn't re-appeared since. In my case I'm convinced the problem lay with the gear cable mechanism, as I don't think a gearbox problem would disappear and re-appear like that, I may be wrong!

Felt as though the cable needed adjusting, not sure if there is adjustment?

 Mine is the same - no 4th! Selectors appear ok externally. I therefore assume it's an internal thing.

Any further help or links to other threads greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As the weather's warmed up now I think frozen cables are unlikely to be the problem. The most likely cause if it's just 4th is a problem which is well reported on Alfa 147s. The gearbox is basically the same. Take the end cover off the gearbox (catch the oil in a container and clean out the swarf which buils up. Reseal the cover and it's done. Don't forget to put the oil back!

Corrosion is the problem, and can happen anytime.

I replied regarding, having problem with the 2nd and the 4th, that was the same exact problem me and few other on this forum had.

But I agree that this isn't the only solution.

I have the same problem - all gears fine and easy except 4th seems as if there is no such ratio in the 'gate' - engine off or on same problem, not hard to get in just impossible.

Did anyone solve this by either the linkage oiling (doesn't this result in problems with other gears too and make moving the stick generally stiff?) or the gear box oil flush/clean out?

Thanks

Ive lost my fourth gear as well. it only works when you hold the gear stick down,. if you let go of it, it pops out with a loud crunching noise.:bang: .Think a new or recon gear box might be needed, Does anyone have any info or the answer? thanks.

Gear selector cable can stretch/corrode and this can cause problems selecting gear,
gear selector mechanism is underneath the battery, however you'll also need to remove the battery tray which can be awkward due to corrosion.
Try selecting 4th and see how much the selector moves, disconnect the cable and see how far it moves when you select 4th manually, if the selector moves and it stays in 4th gear (Reconnect the battery, start the car and try engaging the clutch with the brakes on), it could well be a cable adjustment issue.
If it still jumps out/will not select then probably an internal problem although clutch shouldn't be discounted, the gearbox will have to come out and you'll find out if the clutch is worn at this point anyway.
