Punto (Mk1) My Green 60s

Introduction

Hi guys I am new here:) Used too have a Black 1.7 TD SX like 5 years ago but sadly it got written off by a Bin Wagon:( went through a couple of other cars since then(non fiats) but Now I have just bought this!
99 punto 60s 1.2 I think its only an 8v but the most reliabale car I owned was an 1.4 8v Astra Mk3 so I kinda like the idea of having another 8v.lol

I spent half an hour checking for rust on this car and couldnt find anything serious.lol a little surface here and there in none critical spots and a bit on the exhaust but the Body is in Brilliant nick from what I could see:)

The bonnet and Wings are a little faded from the sun so when i get it home will Deffo be giving it a damn good T-cut and polish:)

I dont intend on doing much to this car in terms of Engine and stuff but I am going to Get a nice set of 15" alloys,Replace the rusty backbox with a Rage backbox, nice oval twinpipe one or summat...I want it a little louder but not so ya can hear it a mile away.lol
Might replace the bumpers with colour coded ones at some point,Deffo gonna replace those orange indis with clear ones, probably remove the strips off the side as if i remember correctly they are only glued on. A hairdrier will make short work of them:)
Basically I am not doing anything Excessive too it just gonna tidy it up alot:) Oh and a add a Sub and upgrade the door speakers, Not going with 6 x 9,s this time. The parcel shelf couldnt hold them properly in my old TD SX If I remember correctly and i think the weight made them sag. So this time i will just upgrade the components instead.
Only cost me 295 with the Part ex for my MOT Failed Almera.lol
Good deal?
yes them ones you linking are mk1 sporting wheels, thats what i would go for and get them painted in anthracite like GT3 wheels (see my cinqucento, it has a set, click pic in my sig to go to its thread).

Full service would defo be top of my list as little history - afterall servicing is the bit that keeps it running efficiently and reliably.
I'd be looking at doing the following myself (some may think i am a bit overkill but you know where you are with everything by doing it all):
-oil and filter
-coolant flush and renew
-new air filter
-new HT leads
-new spark plugs
-new cambelt and tensioner (this is easy on these engines and you can't break valves etc if you get it wrong like on many cars)
-new waterpump
-new thermostat (genuine item not a unbranded white box one)
-new aux belt
-check and replaces brake parts as required (discs, pads, drums, shoes)
-new brake fluid
-check wheel bearings and replace if required
-check gearbox oil level and top up as required
-new fuel filter

Sounds like alot but parts should come in at about £150 and you don't need to do it all in one go, i would start with fluids and filters first. Then the rest of the order would depend how each thing looks but break it into bits, belts and waterpump, checking brakes and wheel bearings, ignition parts. Individually these bits are really cheap and easy to do in a few hours max each.

Will go through these things as and when I can:)

DSCF26162.JPG

Was easy...took about 5 secs too get the other one out and blu was Right. the adaptar(or one of em) from my Almera fits perfectly.lol only problem is that it stays on all the time so I will have too remember to Take the Face off it or I will drain the battery.lol
theres a power button on the Head unit but it doesnt seem too turn it off in this car...strange.lol
I had to get started on my soundsystem..Cant do without music! And the Standard speakers I noticed earlier sound really good with the new Headunit. but I will still be upgrading em. ya cant go wrong with upgrading for more Quality sound:D

Subs are now fitted finally.lol All the wiring is hidden under the plastic trim:)Sounds great now and the standard speakers are doing quite well as mid, tweeters.they will do untill I upgrade the Components in the back and dash.
I took some pics whilst doing it but like a numpty I left my camera at a friends house. will pick it up tomorrow.lol.Couldnt believe how good the paintwork under the rear seats is!Was expecting them to be rusty as hell but the floor looks brand new still!Apart from the mess under the seats...needs a good vacuming.lol
Started on the T-cut today but then after doing the doors, bonnet and wings then the Wonderful british weather turned against me and it started tipping down.lol gonna nip up to Van beeks after and get some Autoglym resin polish which will be going on after I finish T-cutting.

Wheel trims are badly scuffed, chunks missing out of em nd all the paint has worn off so I am gonna take em off and give the steels a coat of black paint.
Just untill i can get some alloys in a few weeks:)
Was gonna have a go at painting the trims White Gloss but they are too badly scuffed tbh.lol. And one of em is odd too the to the Rest:)

Might get a couple of cans of underseal spray too and give it a coat of that.cant hurt.lol

when i first got it the Wings and bonnet were as dull as hell and now with just the T-cut its brought em out a bit. took a couple of hours to go over the whole car.lol
and after polish is done it should be like a mirror!
this how it was when i picked it up. pictures aint the best quality on this camera but ya should be able too see the dullness on the top off the wings, the bonnet and roof were like that too.lol

Fixed the Squealey Alternator belt.looks brand new.lol so I just tightened it up a bit.now it wont wake the entire street up when I start it up.lol

Clutch is making a clicking noise at 3/4 of the way down,Seems to be coming from the Bellhousing,Gears change smoothly though and the clutch still feels smooth to push in apart from the click
Found a clutch kit for £39.95 so will order that next week.
Its not the slave cylinder as it is brand new,was fitted the day I bought the car:)
So will get the kit fitted and see if that cures it-fingers crossed-

On My speedo all the numbers around the outside are barely visible so Think I will get some new dash bulbs...mebbe green seeing as thats what colour the car is.lol or I might just go with traditional Blue.lol

My stickers Finally arrived so put them on earlier:) 2 on the rear quart windows and one on the rear window:)
Doesnt look like I will be putting a backbox on this now as I went to see the guy in the garage next door about the cat which I thought was rusted through, turns out its only the heat shield wrapped around it that is rusted and the cat itself is in good shape:)
He assured me it will not fail an mot as it is now so thats saved me a few quid :)
And it appears that it wasnt actually the cat that was blowing. it was instead the part where the front and rear sections join together.
So now I have 2 choices. I can Either put a new Standard exhaust on it for 60 quid or I could put one of these on:)

(Spotted this on someone elses post I was reading ...cant for the life of me find that post again though.lol)

Am I right in thinking this replaces the section from the behind the cat too the rear??Or does it replace the cat aswell?

Well I have the car booked in for thursday to get a new clutch fitted. Got quoted bout 250 quid for it. Unfortunatly the Clutch gave up on life on Friday afternoon so Gonna be off the road untill thursday-friday:-(
Gonna cost me a fortune in taxi fares this week to work and back.lol

Just got my Car back from the garage. cost 273 quid too fix it...the Clutch fork was screwed too so they put a new one on for me.lol
heres a couple of pics of the old clutch.
Totally Screwed.lol

DSCF30202.JPG

The fork getting bent up like that.is it normal when a clutch goes??lol
It appears too have grooves cut into it.

Anyways should be good now for another at leats 50k miles right???Is nice and smooth now.lol A fly could land on it and depress the pedal:D

Well my car is turning into an expensive one now.:(
Payed 295 + 100 from my old almera part ex .thought I had a good deal there..lol then the clutch went and had to be replaced so that cost me 270 quid..then today it went for its 1st M.O.T since I bought it and failed on the Rear radius arm which is gonna cost bout 85 quid to fix,the exhaust middle and front sections need replacing so thats another 90 quid:bang:...Luckily 2nd hand tyres are only about a tenner each or I woulda been paying another 90 quid for 2 new tyres lol so now I am pushing for a total of 450 quid in repairs so far.which is more than I payed for the car!lol
My house mate suggested I scrap it...but I refused.I am not giving up on it just yet(y)
Couple of other problems I know it has are that one of the Shocks are leaking fluid a little so will probably have to replace both of them soon. And finally my Brake pads and Discs are quite worn but at least with those I can do it myself and not have to pay a garage to do it for me.lol
hopefully after these jobs are done then It will be good for another couple of years(fingers crossed) lol

not to sound cold or anything but its a 15 year old car, things don't last forever. doesn't sound that bad to me that - and would have not cost much at all to DIY fix. I'd punch your mate for even suggesting to scrap it for that, its next to nothing and on most stuff other than a fiat that would have cost alot more than it did really. This is ultimately what happens come MOT time if you buy a really cheap car, everything you have mentioned except tyres have probably been on the car since new so they are doing pretty well IMO.

There's nothing on the list that isn't a consumable to me which isn't bad at all given the age of it. Much better than needing large sections cut out and replaced. I suppose as a percentage of the value of the car it's a lot of work but the total to sort that lot out wouldn't even buy a set of premium tyres for a modern car.
