X1/9 One years work

Introduction

Hi all I have reached two milestones this month it's one year since I started work on the x1/9 and the second is the underside of the car is finally all welded up and most the surface rust has been dealt with.
I got given the car around 10 years ago part stripped and some work carried out and at first was just bodging it up to get MOTed and look O.K but soon realized even a cheap restoration is not cheap when you get started so it sat there for quite a few years in the way so here's what I've done in the last year around 10 hrs a week most weeks when other commitment don't interfere.
And more pics

That's the underside all welded although I forgot to take pictures at some of the stages like the rear strut towers (the bitches!)

Very impressive effort. Hope you can enjoy the car soon. It will be worth it! The cars are an under appreciated masterpiece.

Will this be a restoration back to original spec or have you any specific plans?

Engine has been in for mock-up, Alterations were needed to the chassis as per picture the main engine support needed alteration as there was a 20mm offset from the x1/9 to the Punto gearbox and strengthening done as well also the gearbox casing needed trimming to fit as it has a large collar that gets in the way.
The cable shift is from an mgf and brackets fabricated to shift to the correct side and the Punto gear selector unit altered so the throw was the correct way and the gearbox has a support bracket welded to stop gearbox swing.
Alterations required also to the oil pressure switch that is built into the support arm on the Punto (cut down lots then switch and bleed plug swapped around)
Lots of other little tweaks done as well but there was nothing too taxing.

Going bright orange (Ral2004 pure orange) with black and cream interior, picture not very good colour the cream looks white!
Was always going to be Broom yellow till a few month ago when I changed my mind as I remembered when I had a yellow Dolomite on sunny days the car used to turn black with all the fly's that used to land on it!

Cool. Nice seat covers.
I painted my first car 'signal orange'. Looked amazing on a nice day in the sunshine. Although on a wet day it did glow a bit :)

Took the windscreen out on Monday evening hoping for the best praying that no one had been there before, I new there was plenty of rust lurking but it's much easier to make templates up for repair work if you have the original shape to work with but i'm never that lucky! what a mess, rusty, bad welding and loads of filler! luckily I managed to get the screen out out without breaking so am using that for reference.
Here's where i'm at so far top of screen repaired and bottom drivers side corner and working my way around bit by bit.

I needed a new front for mine as the plastic grill was shot and can't say i'm a fan of the 1500 front end so as I will be having an extra radiator at the front for my charge cooler set up decided to make up a new panel to include the splitter and grill together that will easily be removable so I can bleed the cooler rad.

I'm going to make 1500 styled alloy bumpers and have them polished so i'm hoping the new designed front and polished bumpers will look great with all the other chrome trim on the car.
