Seicento Seicento Sporting MS in faded red :)

Introduction

Seicento Sporting Michael Schumacher in faded red :)

Just picked up one of these for a 70 mile a day commute and so far, great fun.

It's a 2001 Y reg, 80k miles, full service history, new rad, alternator, battery, handbrake cables, clutch and clutch cable and exhaust were done by the previous owner.

So far ( 20 miles in ) i've fixed the following ...

Seized cooling fan and a blown fuse, WD40 on fan bearings and a new fuse fixed that.

Leaking sunroof - removed all the bolts and siliconed up the rubber washers, new gaskets made from bike inner tube and silicon greased the seal. No more leaks.

Things i might fix ...

Both fog lights are not working, one definitely due to water through a cracked lens and the other .... probably got bored years ago.

Clunking from the steering, presume / assume it's either track rod ends or balljoints / arb bushes.

Paint - it's a faded sorry state, good enough condition, just looks like FIAT forgot to put suntan lotion in the original paint :)

The only thing i'm stuck with now are what tyres to get, have seen you can get Pirelli P6000 175 50 R15 or 165 60 R14 in more choices, am inclined to go for the higher profile as it's cheaper and will probably dent the mpg less. I take it there are no issues with using a 165 60 R14 tyre on that wheel? Miata tyre calculator reckons it's within tolerance

175/50-14 3.4in 10.4in 20.9in 65.6in 965 0.0%
165/60-14 3.9in 10.9in 21.8in 68.5in 925 4.3%

Bit more searching reckons 185 50 R14 will fit - Maxxis do their MA Z1 in that size and that'll do fine. Will get 4 of those ordered and fitted next month - i'll play with what's left of the P6000s for now
I'm aware this won't sharpen the handling but that's fine.

Since everyone on forums likes pics, here's a few of it, nicknamed it 'Shooey' which seems entirely apt. Outside is faded in many places, once i get some time i'll buzz the DA over it and give it a few coats of decent wax but i suspect the paint has faded beyond help. It is utterly manky inside but now the leaking roof is fixed ( and its no longer carrying a dog around) i'll get in there with an aquavac and make it a lot nicer :)

Heat .... heat heat heat .... 5 minutes of blowtorch and *PING* bolt loose and all changed over.

Both shocks had NO resistance left in them, both top mount bearings were loose and both sides the rubber had come away from the bearing plate.

Quick round the block, all knocking and clunking gone and something approaching tidy handling :D

Rear shocks left for a warmer day and the presence of an angle grinder :)

Small update.

FIAT does about 47mpg when you're up and down the gears and having fun and 60+ if you don't go above 55mph and are careful with the throttle. Where small light cars gain ground is the speed you can carry through a corner or a roundabout because you can take a straighter line. Also with it being a tiny block, it gets warm very quickly although I always let it get to temperature before setting off.

Done almost 6.5k miles in the little thing. By the time its tax expires in mid Feb ... it will be almost 8k miles. By then it will have paid for itself, including all the maintenance and the Honda hasn't cost me a penny in wear and tear during that period. Haven't had to faff with an extra service, winter tyres or hardtops and it hasn't been washed since I got this. Tbh given the start it had, i'm amazed it has lasted as long as it has!

Keep it or replace it? Not sure yet. I'm not really a 'two car' sort of person, can't be doing with taxing / insuring / servicing / MOT'ing two things - i'd rather have one car for all and that means compromises - shopping for something based on a compromise is never an easy task. However, as something to go shopping in, take things to the tip in or just generally abuse, you can't beat having something cheap and nasty to abuse for such things. It still desperately needs the rear bushes sorting, the rear shocks are dead and I think there's something loose in the steering rack oh and both front wheel bearings are humming their own merry little tune - i'll get the bearings and trackrod ends done later this month.

What i'll most likely end up doing is running it I crash it, someone else crashes into it, until it refuses to run any further or is beyond sensible repair.

Oh and the only thing i've washed on the outside of the FIAT since buying it are the lights, the windows and the registration plates

6 months tax, 2 front wheel bearings and both trackrods now fitted - the old bearings were trashed when they came out. May need to swap the wheels front to back as i suspect the knackered bearings have caused the tyres to wear funny and that's the remaining noise.

Changed the cracked rear light cover for a new OEM cheap one off Ebay as the original one was rotten. Unfortunately the reason it was cheap was because it was a European one with no reverse light lens, a red foglight one instead.

Rewired the fog lights so i have two rear fog lights, one on each side and wired in a couple of cheap LED DRLS as reverse lights into the little gaps under the rear bumper.

Well it's time for me to say Ta Ta - off to pick an Aygo up on Friday and this is going in PX for it. Corroded rear brake lines, a rotten fuel tank and rear bushes still needing doing. I couldn't see how the fuel tank was coming out without needing replacing and it was just too much work to do.

So if you see Y781 NMJ in an auction - it'll have 4 good tyres, reasonable engine, not a bad shell and a fairly clean interior :)

£350 PX which isn't too shabby at all and no hassle dealing with Ebay / Paypal or private hagglers.

Thanks for the help along the way (y)
