Punto (Mk2/2b) The Runabout. Punto ELX Speedgear

Introduction

Well after finally scrapping the family runabout, a 1998 Vauxhall Corsa Breeze nonetheless (Awful car). I have now convinced the family the next runabout car should be a Fiat. Named the runabout because that's what it is, its nobodies car really, everyone will drive it from time to time. The new owner who will drive it the most is getting a little older now, the gear changes are getting crunchier so we opted for an auto, speedgear = :slayer: Sooo smooth.

Anyway here it is, 1.2 16v, 50k on the clock.

Not a huge fan of the fake alloys :yuck:, not sure if I should take them off and just run steelies, ideally I want to put alloys on but its not my car...

Wow its been some years since I last posted over here...
I'm pleased to say about 18 months or so ago I fitted actual Fiat hubcaps to it and they look miles better

The rear light cluster had to been cleaned up again about 6 months ago because the car kept saying it was in reverse again :D

But all has been fine until this week. Dreaded PAS failure  I knew I was bound to happen eventually with this being an '02 car :bang:
So the PAS will be working fine although it seems to make thing slight tinkling noise when going straight ahead or turning very slightly (as if you were just repositioning in the road rather than turning). Then it'll just go completely with red PAS light on the dash. It remains this way for the rest of the drive (although I'm kinda used to it having driven a car without PAS for 3 years anyway :p). If you pull over and switch the car off and back on again the PAS starts working immediately again and will often keep working for upwards of 10miles sometimes until it dies again.

I've looked as I knew there is heaps of info on this subject. Wondering if anyone can narrow down the likely cause though considering it works fine 90% of the time and then it'll cut out but with a restart of the car its completely fine again?
I'm hoping its a bad connection to the battery or the alternator. It could also be the relay connections in the motor itself I understand, I have built circuit boards before and can solder so I would be confident in repairing this myself.

All my tools are with my other Punto project at the moment but hopefully next week I'll get working on it, why can't it just have hydraulic steering like my mk1
