Panda (Classic) White Panda clx twin sunnies

Introduction

Introducing my '94' clx.

I've had this one for just over a year now, I bought it to be a basis for a project but am still unable to start on it yet. As a couple of my other Pandas that I use regularly are coming off the road to have engine upgades etc I needed something to use, so this one is being readied for the road......

It's a bit tatty and needs a few jobs for the mot, the mot work will of course have to be done, but I'm not really interested in the cosmetics at this point, that can be tended to when it goes back to being a project.

The drivers side has a few dents, and the bottoms of the doors have been hand painted with what looks like smooth Hammerite, I don't know why coz they're not particularly rusty, but all of this will stay as it is for now. I have given it a wash and polish though, if only to make sure it doesn't deteriorate any further.......

The tyres were weedy little things so I've fitted 13" Punto steels with 175/70/13 tyres all round. The Punto wheels have slightly more inset so I'm hoping that I won't have any wheel arch fouling problems.

That's it so far, should have finished the cleaning up by the end of tomorrow, and made a start on the mot work.
Forgot to mention the interior. When I bought it the interior was ok, just a little worn and grubby. The seats were the same trim pattern as the old seats from my blue clx, as they had only done 30,000 miles they were like new, so of course I did a swap :)

just for a laugh can you take some pictures of the roof from inside the car?

Never seen what the head lining/sunroofs look like in panda

What no Maserati buckets? You disappoint me magazine featured modding man.
Watching with interest, yours have a habit of scrubbing up well.

:) Cheers Andrew. Well it's had all the scrubbing it's going to get for now, it's presentable enough I think........

The dents don't show up very well in the photos. (y) The sills have been plated to death by the previous owner but they are solid enough for the mot I think, if they can get through this time I'll be doing them properly once its decommissioned.

One job that did need to be done now was the wipers........

The arm was snapped off at the base and what was left had been bodged onto the spindle, basically everything had to be replaced. Fortunately I had the necessary spares so all is now well.
The exhaust is next on the list as a non original silencer has been 'bodged' to fit and the joint is cr*p. I think I'm going to just replace it with an original one.

Here you go, a bit grubby as I haven't done the interior yet.......

You'll notice in previous pics that the front grille is painted silver at the top, this was a previous experiment that I didn't particularly like so I've re painted it body colour, plus a bit at the bottom too. I've done this a couple of times before, Charmania for example, and quite like the look. Feel free to disagree ;) .....

I've also been rubbing down and protecting bits of the underside that were looking a little rusty, nothing serious so just a wire brushing and a coat of rust converter followed by dinitrol wax should see the rust is kept at bay for now.

While I was under there I replaced the rear shockers as they were way past thier best, the old ones from the blue clx came in handy here.

I aslo sorted that dodgy rear silencer, fitting a standard one in it's place. here's the one I removed.......

Not the most professionally fitted silencer I've ever seen :p. It did sound quite nice without being noisy though, so I may use it in the near future.

For me...

Fully painted for a chunky look...

Partly painted as you have done for a sporty look....

Agreed, think I'll keep it sporty look for now then maybe change things when it gets its proper makeover.

Well I had a go at the front sunroof yesterday as it was pretty worn and leaky, plus I had a better one fitted to the Panda Colour, so I decided to do a swap....

It's a very straightforward job if anyone wants to try it, typical Panda simplicity :). Two bolts and seven rivets are all that hold it on, remove the two pivot bolts first......

This then allows you to fold the whole roof forwards to gain access to the seven pop rivets.......

I swapped the rubber seal too, gave everything a clean up..........

Then you simply pop rivet the new one in place through the metal stengthening strip, I also sat it on a bead of silicone sealer along this front edge rather than relying on the fabric of the sunroof alone to be watertight. Refit the two pivot bolts, job done.....

The back one is starting to go too but will be fine for now, I intend to cover them with new fabric at a later date, probably mohair if they do the right colour as the original vinyl dries out and cracks too easily.

In for mot this morning, not sure that the patchy sills are going to get through but it's better to let them tell me than do a load of stuff unnecessarily. Even if they pass they will certainly be replaced properly at a later date.

:((n). Sills didn't pass mot.

Everything else ok though. It really got a thorough going over as the garage doing the mot were visited today by the vosa inspectors, and guess which car they wanted to re check . Fortunately for the garage thier findings matched those of the inspectors so they got the all clear.

I've now got four small holes to sort out though.

Sunroofs....... I will be on mastermind with that as my subject..

Good write up vern...(y) I like the silicone idea and will copy that.

I take it the corners on yours were not too rusty and the strip was in good nick.... Funny enough I was sorting my roofs today...(y)

Cheers Kev (y). No, neither sunroof was rusty, just the sills :(.

Ok, the welding's been done so she's ready for the re test Monday morning :).

Update on my tyre choice. Although I've had 175/70/13's on my 750L for ages with no fouling problems they don't want to fit this one, the rears are fine but the front ones catch on the bumper on lock.
I've now fitted a set of Panda steels instead with 165/70/13's and they have fitted perfectly, plus they're M+S tyres which is just as well coz it's snowing :D.
