Multipla The Toad.

Introduction

So after owning all sorts of stuff from Buicks to Polos I've finally lost the plot and purchased a "bug eye" Multipla. It's a 110 JTD ELX with only 35k miles but it's a bit (err very) rough around the edges. The colour is horrid, actually I've always hated all Multiplas so it was an interesting choice. Anyway I presume you're not after my life story.

For me this is a second car so it's not about performance (obviously), it's about comfort and practicality. We'll see how long that lasts. I am very tempted to slam it, which wouldn't be comfy or practical at all. But it would look sooo right. I think it will eventually end up on airbags, I dont think I could ever go back to creeping over speedbumps after the amount of fun I've had this week.

Anyway, I've not done much to it yet and I've not got much money so it's a work in progress.

Here is a chop I did of the for sale pic to whet your appetite:

So sadly the missus has peed on the bonfire and insists she would rather go for black and not grey. So we've not even started yet and the plans are already out of the window!

Day 1:

Love this car already. Double electric sunroof, really comfy, good on fuel, should have done this ages ago.

Added some stickers and copious amounts of airfresheners (some kid has puked in the back), also added some handcuffs hanging from the rear bumper and hammered the hell out of some of the dents.

Aww yeah, stickers. Now I'm cool.

Day 2:

Which after a bit of cheeky 5-up speedbump action at high speeds lasted around 3 days... :D

Must say I like it much more now that it's broken, much more character.

Then after about 5 days some more parts started showing up

Bosch flatblade wipers (yaaay I can seeeee)

K&N filter (again only because the old one was cack)

Floor mats (already sporting a chunk of poo)

O HAI

Think that's it for now, more to come.
Re: EmDee's Short Bus

Thanks for the kind replies. I actually agree with the comment about the wheel colour, I don't like it either! That's why I've changed it 3 times and they've not even been on the car yet! In fairness they look completely different in the flesh. There is another coat of tint spray on them since I took the above pic so they basically look black unless you catch them in the sun. Once they're on the car and filthy dirty I think they'll look okay though (fingers crossed).

Got another new headlight this morning - the last one delivered had a broken clip on it (sent it back for a refund) but after looking on ebay I found a brand new one for less money! ended up costing £20 after postage for a mint headlight so I'm chuffed.

Also got some led bulbs in the sidelights and sorted out the stereo last night so I can listen to CDs and usb sticks - it's even got aux in so I can listen to ipod/mobile phones/anything with a headphone jack.

Hopefully those wheel bolts will be here soon so I can get those hoops on it

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

Nice looking Multipla (There are some words that I didn't ever think I would say in a sentence)

I think that it needs to have the shark mouth on the side, just to look a little cool. A couple of RAF roundrels too (y) I do know of a aero-inspired '57 Chev that had approx 3000 rivets airbrushed on, the bloke reckoned that it took him (and his painter) about 500 hours of work just to do them. Maybe give them a miss ;)

Can't wait to see more though, don't keep me on the edge of my seat for too long...

Yeah, I had a photochop in my first post in this thread but for some reason it has disappeared (I probably put it in the wrong category or something - why cant i just use Photobucket!?), but the RAF roundel did feature in it. As for the rivets, well I was actually going to use real rivets, which would probably be quicker than airbrushing them! Anyway, I'm not so sure about that now.

Actually I've had a dig around and found that chop

MultiUSAFslammage.jpg

Shame i can't edit my first post though!

So anyway I got a call today telling me to come and pick up my stereo fascia panel jobby, right now its just sitting in there with no surrounding panel and looks a touch ghetto. So I'll get some pics of that. I should also be receiving delivery of some 20mm hubcentric spacers for the rear wheels soon (thanks to the refund for that headlight) so I thought I'd clean out my Paypal account. ;)

All I need now is some bloody wheel bolts!

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

It disappeared because I presume you moved it on Photobucket, which is the exact reason that Photobucket can't be used ;) as for the inability to edit your first post, some people can...

I'd stick with the colour you have in preference to the 'shopped one, and I would use a RAF roundrel not a USAF logo if I were you, but its just my opinion. Looks good though.

Re: EmDee's Short Bus

I would never dream of posting a photobucket image on this site!!! I can assure you it was uploaded onto this forum and was working for the first week or so but I think an admin had moved it - presumably because I had put it in the wrong place! As for the feedback I agree with your thoughts on the USAF vs RAF roundel and I assure you I'm not planning on painting it another colour anytime soon :D

Anyway, thanks for the compliments, hopefully I'll make some good progress in the coming weeks.

I don't need wobblies, but the coupe wheels are much thicker than the standard multis (where the bolt passes through) so I just need slightly longer ones. I have a mate posting me some for free but he was a bit slow to send them and now he's sent them tehy seem to have got lost in the royal fail.

Anyhoo I've ordered spacers which come with bolts so I only need 8 now but I'm sure I'll sort something.

Thanks for the offer though. (y)

Re: EmDee's Short Bus.

Big thanks go out to bludvl_x19 for editing my first post to include that chop (y)

I'll have to do another one on the coupe alloys with the RAF roundel on "satin bronze green" :D

In other news today I have mostly been looking at huge JDM arches (yo) and banded steels then switching the tab back to my bank account - then switching back and forth a few more times and then crying. :(

Currently my life needs the following in order to be complete:

  • AIR RIDE (£1200)
  • JDM arches (£69)
  • Banded steels (about £300 without tyres)
  • Multipla Abarth front bumper (£139)
  • Black leather retrim (again stupid monies)

Re: EmDee's Short Bus.

Cool, thanks for those nice words. I just had a moment of low mojo this afternoon and addressed the issue by lubing up, going out, buying bolts and putting the wheels on the old girl :)

Anyway much better now, deepest apologies for that whingey post above about my future plans, but it would look the tits with a bit of cash chucked at it to be fair ;)

So while I was farting around I snapped a few pics, it'd be rude not to - although as you may have come to expect they are a bit pants, they're just like the rest of the pics in this thread, mobile fodder :D

Took a few of my shiny new wishbones (did them both)

New discs and pads (er did both of these too)

And of course the wheels (did all 4)!

Check out those awesome ditchfinders - I know you're jealous ;)

Before I packed it in for the day I treated the old bird to some Diesel Magic!

I realise this stuff is bottled placebo, but since the car has clearly been neglected over the years I figure it couldn't hurt to try and clean out the fueling system a little (and yes I had a full tank).

Anyway, she's sitting a bit better now than she was in the pics (I've put air in the tyres too) and I'm pretty happy. Funny how wheels never fail to completely transform a car.

Tomorrow I will collect the fascia for around the stereo and with a bit of luck my spacers will show up. Happy days. (y)

Re: EmDee's Short Bus.

Dont want to disappoint but I think you might be waiting a while before I can afford those bags. We were told today that we are about to exchange on a new house so I'll have to curb costs (the reason for getting this ) but if you add up everything in my post above (not including the leather) it comes to only slightly less than I've spent in total so far (that would be including the car)...

Besides I fancy a supercharged lump for my Polo

Re: EmDee's Short Bus.

After getting the wheels on yesterday I was pretty chuffed and when I was inspecting them this morning I realised I had put the directional tyres on backwards. Bum.

After swapping them round I decided to put my new headlight on. The headlight saga has been going on since I bought this thing and for some reason I have still not been able to find one that isn't broken!

The one that came on the car looks like this:

DSC_07001.jpg

Here's the back of the first one I got from ebay for £27

brokenheadlight.jpg

Also broken. So I sent it back (they were great to deal with to be fair).

And I then found a BRAND NEW one IN THE BOX for £20!!!

DSC_0701.jpg

Too good to be true? Yup, also broken. This time I thought well hey it might have the same broken bit as the one I sent back, but this one is new and it was cheaper, so I decided to try and fit it.

DSC_0702.jpg

Went on a treat actually - since I took that picture I put the bolt back on with a decent sized washer so it's being held in nicely.

And they even light up:

Re: EmDee's Short Bus.

Received delivery of my spacers today, they're aluminium 20mm hubcentric jobbies. As usual I decided to wait until it was pissing down and nearly dark before I went out to fit them.

Here's a before and after as perceived by the camera phone:

spacer.jpg

Check out that sexy Polo :yum:

The Toad looks awful from that angle even with the extra 20mm (not to mention about 10mm extra from those wheels). I think it looks better now, nearly in line with the arch, but still needs serious altitude adjustment though ;) It's a wonder I don't have constant nosebleeds.

DSC_0708.jpg

There's almost a hint of camber there ;) Slightlyflush? Okay maybe not

Edit: Would it be possible for some kind admin person to change the thread title to The Toad?

First time I have seen this thread and I am honestly lost for words, not sure if I love it or hate it.

Extremely marmite but im swaying towards liking it

Is it wrong to be ashamed of saying that? I hope not.

After reading back at the reason you purchased the car, you said you wanted a comfortable ride and practicality, with bags I highly doubt you'll get that.

I would love to see you pull off having bags, although the coupe wheels will need addressing with the lack of poke.

I will enjoy seeing the updates, keep up the work
