Delighted to see Fiat come in the top 10 for engine reliability on the recent report from Warranty Direct http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring...iability-the-top-10-brands.html?frame=2457919

Have owned quite a few Fiats over the past 40 years including some exotica (2300s coupe; 850 sports; Tempra 1.6; barchetta; Punto Mk1; Grande Punto 1.4; Panda 1.2) and only once in all that time has a Fiat failed to get me home. That was in a Mk1 Punto when head gasket blew.

Nice one Mr. Fiat.

this is good news, it's about time fiat got some good reliability feedback.

i've had fiats most of my life and as you say have only been let down once with a 1984 fiat uno with carbaretta problems lol but it did only cost me £190 with tax & mot.

Fiats have always had brilliant engines.

It was always the electrics and rust that let them down the most. Now: rust is sorted and the electrics are as good anybody's.

Time to sort out trim problems now...

Whilst Fiat are in the top ten I don't think there's room for complacency - still four times as likely to fail as Honda according to that list.
But I know what I'd rather be driving!

And likely to last four times longer than a Honda. How many cars have you had with 1,484,000 miles on the clock before it expired ? (flywheel bolts sheared trashing the crank & bellhousing)

Yes, Honda engines are very reliable. When my sisters HRV fell to pieces due to severe rust, the exhaust had fallen off and most of the mechanical parts were knackered, the engine was still a peach.

When 90% of the cars that fiat have sold in the last 5 years have the mechanical complexity of a knife and fork it shouldn't be hugely surprising the engines themselves don't go wrong. I know twin air and multi air have been around a while but I'd be willing to bet most cars surveyed have an 8v derivative of the FIRE under the bonnet.

Actually I drive a 12yr old 1.2 16v bravo with 148k on the clock - 78k put on by me in the last 3 years.

Everything works perfectly, and the engine is still as sweet as. OK, it gets fresh oil and filters every 10k, and I have had to change a number of bits including the clutch (shagged when I got it), front subframe (tim worm), rear dampers and all brakes (but I am picky) - but I have absolutely no complaints, especially as I only paid a few hundred notes for it in the first place - and that included 6 months tax & MOT!! :)

Certainly the older Lampredi designed engines (128, Uno, Regata, Strada etc.) are pretty much unbreakable if watered, oiled, belt changed etc. I think the same can be said of the later FIRE engines.

I gunned the hell out of my Uno 1300SX with over 6000 track miles, always hitting 6K rpm or higher, and no engine problems. I did fit an oil cooler but the rest was all standard. Wife did same in her Strada Abarth, again no problems.

I'm hoping the new MultiAir technology (valve actuator units) become as reliable as hydraulic tappet technology.
