I am getting ready to replace the differential pinion seal in my 1974 124 Spider.

I have heard various stories about replacing the crush sleeve.

Can the seal replacement be accomplished without replacing the sleeve?

And, its there a recommended procedure?

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

The Spider workshop manual says for pre 1978 cars:

"If bevel pinnion, pinnion bearings and differential carrier are not changed, the collapsible spacer (crush sleeve) can be used again. If any of these parts are changed, a new spacer must be used."
