its a W reg Fiat bravo 1.2 80 16v. Its engine seized about 1yr ago and it was replaced, and as far as i can recall the clutch was done also.

The car will not go into any gear whilst the engine is running and the clutch pedal depressed. It gives a resounding "cant find it - grind it" noise if i try and put it into gear.

When i press the clutch down, about 3/4 pressed down there is like a grinding feel (cant really discribe it) - but it may be related to the hydraulic pump thing I can see under the battery cradle.

There are no warning lights on the dash and the brake fluid level is fine.
the car is now un-driveable, and im looking to see if anyone can shed any light on the possible issues.

I dont drive, posting for the missus, so forgive me for sketchy info.

Personally i think it is the clutch, but im no mechanic. If it is, is this simple enough to replace yourself. I have done the exhaust, shocks, windows, etc in the past, so im not too much of a noob.

any advice would be appreciated.

I think it's likely to be the clutch. Could be extreme contamination of the plates or malfittage following the engine swap. Also could be a fubared slave cylinder, so orth checking that first.

am i right thinking the slave cylinder is the piston looking this under the battery that moves when the clutch is depressed.

I forgot to mention earlier that on inspection of this piston thing, i noticed the shoe/rubber cover thing was split. Although not a massive concearn, may be interlinked somewhat.

the pedal does come back up on its own accord. Is this simple enough to replace??

Before i start ripping stuff out, are there any tests I can do to eliminate certain possibilities. Ie start in gear, check all gears whilst engine running stationary (im plucking stuff out of the air here but hey)

Yeah, generally if you can engage all gears ithout the engine running, points to a clutch issue (or the slave).

The slave cylinder should be easy to change (and pretty cheap) may be a good move to try before pulling the gearbox off!
