They are trying to say paper is the best for filtration, next is cotton and polyester is rubbish. Any knowledge on this??
they are correct that paper is usually a better filter per cm2, but that does not mean it is better for use on a car's air filter. there are other issues to consider.
1. better filtration per cm2 is fine, but for a paper element it means shorter life because it will block up more easily, meaning you need to replace it frequently.
2. to acheive the same flow characteristics as cotton you need a bigger surface area, so paper filters need to be bigger than cotton.
3. cotton elements do a perfectly adequate job of filtering the air, so better filtration from paper has no benefit.
4. cotton elements are easily cleaned and reused. paper is not.
all things considered we can say that cotton is a better choice in every respect.
i'm not sure what you mean by polyester. can you provide an example of a polyester filter?
if you mean the foam sponge type (like pipercross) then they are the worst choice imo because there are only 2 types, those that allow dirt through (single layer cheap type) or those that restrict air flow (triple layer multigrade). either way i do not consider them suitable for use.
