I have some fight on slovak forums about sport. filters, anyone have some compare chart of filtration power/air permeability ?????
They are trying to say paper is the best for filtration, next is cotton and polyester is rubbish. Any knowledge on this??

Thanks

Many tests ahve been carried out about the filter media and the conclusions are within reasons the same.

Also you havt to distinguish between filter media and actual filter. Depeneding on the shape of the filter ther percentage of the area of the filtermedium usable varies greatly.

Also to consider is that the shape of the throat on cones, twin cones and anclosed elments has got quite an impact on overall flow.

Pretty much the worst flowing filter is an unoilede sponge.

Oiled sponges flow considerably better and maintain flow for a reasonable time. But are still behined every other medium when having a high dust retention factor.

Some steel mesh filters flow quite well having the advantage that they are the easiest to maintain.

Paper filters flow very well, but clogg very quickly and therefore loose out on the flow rate.

Cotton gauze filters are very similar to new paper filters in flow. Some are slightly better and some are slightly behind. But cotton elements maintain flow longer.

they are correct that paper is usually a better filter per cm2, but that does not mean it is better for use on a car's air filter. there are other issues to consider.

1. better filtration per cm2 is fine, but for a paper element it means shorter life because it will block up more easily, meaning you need to replace it frequently.

2. to acheive the same flow characteristics as cotton you need a bigger surface area, so paper filters need to be bigger than cotton.

3. cotton elements do a perfectly adequate job of filtering the air, so better filtration from paper has no benefit.

4. cotton elements are easily cleaned and reused. paper is not.

all things considered we can say that cotton is a better choice in every respect.

i'm not sure what you mean by polyester. can you provide an example of a polyester filter?
if you mean the foam sponge type (like pipercross) then they are the worst choice imo because there are only 2 types, those that allow dirt through (single layer cheap type) or those that restrict air flow (triple layer multigrade). either way i do not consider them suitable for use.

polyester filter is the same as cotton but using some sort of polyester fabric- Sprintfilter is making them as "S"(supercompetizione) type. it dont need to use special shampoo and oil them(like cotton do), just blowout with compressed air from inside and clean in petrol or some ordinary cleaning liquid used at home.

polyester has better airflow (5.050 Litres/miliseconds vs 4.90 L/ms for cotton) and better filtration - thats what advertisement say.
theyre used at Alfa Romeo 147cup, V8 superstar, Mazda rx8 Trophy, Lotus Elise Cup..

unluckily sprintfilter side is empty, and didnt find any reviews for them in english
