Im just wondering as I've been told by others that so long as Im fully comp, Im allowed to drive other peoples cars so long as they're fully comp and i have permission etc. however on my insurance it says that i don't have the extension of being able to drive other cars but I've been told that ill be able to be but it'll take it down to third party.
many thanks

DOC is always 3rd party only on other cars.

You can only do it if it specifically says on your policy; some Fully comp policies may not have it; it also depends on your age.

DOC cover is usually reserved for those aged 25 or over who who do not work in the motortrade.. it is often offered with TPFT AND fully comprehensive policies, it is a common misconception that if you have a fully comprehensive cover you automatically have DOC cover. A lot of people fall into this trap and end up with IN10 convictions.
A lot of insurers have also taken the DOC entitlement away from their polices, mainly due to people abusing it, especially under 21 years old, eg insure a 1.0L Corsa, drive 'Daddy's Impreza.

It also only normally offers 3rd party cover, when you drive using DOC cover as far as I am aware?

I had DOC taken off my policy to shave a few quid off the price.
I think it's a good idea for all insurers to remove it - as long as they lower their premiums as well. What I didn't like was the way the industry seems to have changed the car use from SDP & commuting to just SDP with commuting as a paid extra - Strangely, I am covered to drive anywhere in Europe - something I cannot get removed to save cash, even though I will never take my car abroad (and if I did, I would get a temporary cover OR hire a car out there).
I think they purposely include tat they know the majority will never use (like bloatware on a PC) and force you to pay for the odd essential (like word processor or anti virus !).
Sure I read somewhere that the OFT are going to look into the sharp practices of the insurance industry - and about time too.

that's because too many people crash trying to rush to work or home, so them that don't use the car for getting to work don't have to pay for everyone else's crashes

they should add more for school run use, may stop a lot of people who only live a mile or less away from the school using the car to pick kids up or drop them off

It'a an EU legal requirement that all motor policies issued within the EU include third party cover in all other EU member states.

But if it's part of their standard product then it part of their product, the cost of tailoring policies as much as some people want isn't viable.

Could always try another insurer that doesn't include it as standard, but then their premiums may be higher in the first place.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread.

Just watched road wars & a SAAB pinged their ANPR so they pulled it over for no insurance. The guy said it was his wife's car but that it was OK as his cover protected him whilst driving other vehicles.
The copper said that as far as he was aware, the 'other' vehicle still had to have insurance in its own right.
They phoned through to the guy's insurance company & they confirmed that this was the case.
As the car didn't have insurance in its own right then the guy wasn't covered.

They allowed the guy to buy cover at the roadside but he was still stung for £200 fine & 6 points for driving uninsured vehicle.

DOC's as already said is subject to third party cover only and it has to be being driven with the owners permission and be insured in it's right.

Another stipulation I noticed on my wife's policy (Sheila's wheels) on which I am a named driver, is that any other car we do drive on this basis, must not be a car that either of us are the registered keeper of.

That was also mentioned as well (slipped my mind)

I reckon they've had to tighten the rules because of things like ...

Although I cannot seriously understand the mentality of buying a 'shed' just so's you can get fully comp for next to nothing then go out driving something a bit tasty on TPFT :nutter:

you dont have to work in the motor trade to not be able to drive other cars. i was a van driver for 12 months and i wasnt allowed to drive other cars. They said its cos i use another vehicle on a daily basis
