need a bit of advice, i've got this on my policy, i always assumed the car you were going to drive 3rd party had to be insured by its owner as it was a term with previous insurance, the terms on my certificate only say that it must not already be insured by me, i must not be insured on it, can't secure it's release after being seized etc.

no mention of it saying the owner of the car must hold valid insurance.

can't ring them as it's sunday and i need to do something :)

what do you lot think?

The car needs to be insured by someone else as well, IE the owner. Otherwise if its parked up and the handbreak fails, it technically doesn't have insurance. Happened a few times on Road Wars and such.

This used to be an easy question to answer. It all depended on what your insurance said. Some companies required that the car you intend to drive under DOC had other insurance and some didn't.

If no other cover was required then your DOC covered it as long as you were in it and also if you left it for purposes that were an integral part of the journey. So you could leave it to pay for fuel, collect items from a shop etc. It would cease to be covered if you parked it and left it for somebody else to collect. Or if you left it for a long period - if you had borrowed it to drive to work for example as the journey would be considered to have finished and the journey home would be a separate trip.

The SORN rules complicate this as they require that a vehicle is either SORN'd or insured at all times. My understanding of the law - which may be wrong - is that if a vehicle is SORN'd and found on the road it will breach the SORN rules and the registered keeper will be liable for a fine. I have no idea what would happen to a person driving a SORN'd car under DOC and neither do any of the lawyers I have asked about it. I suppose I have to wait until I get one in court and see what happens.
