right at the moment i have a alpine cd player that has 4x50 watt output, i had a look on ebay for some new speakers, and bought some 30watt RMS alpine 6 1/2" speakers and in the description said, "easily handle alpines 4x60 watt stereo" so i thought good, there be great with a 4x50 watt one, so fitted them and they go half volume before they distort loads, so what is the minimum RMS wattage the speakers need to be? and what 6 1/2" speakers you recommend with the alpine 4x50 watt stereo? must be less than £20 second hand from ebay, and then £10 for postage.

your headunit will be putting out 50w max and on an apline unit thats typically around 18w RMS. So do the math a 40w rms speaker can take more than double what your headunit is turning out. Its not all about watts. Its the way its delivered among other things.

But most decent speakers arent designed to be run from a headunit as well. Best thing to do is go listen to some of the speakers in halfords etc then buy them from ebay as they all have a different type of sound.
