Re: Grande Punto, Grande Flood. help!!!

i would think they'd assume you'd be travelling at legal speeds, and if so, i'd really be hoping for 45mpg, not 32.

Agreed. Mine will happily do 45mpg(ish) at 70mph, though that does go down to under 30mpg if you are in a rush 'cos the girlfriend has told you she is waiting.........:p

Re: Grande Punto, Grande Flood. help!!!

When they are working the cars are great for the money, OK the build quality tends to be average, the handling has never been a strong point but the engines are perky, equipment levels are good and they generally look good, in my experience they come with frustrating issues and the dealers aren't great. That's just my opinion though.

All cars are capable of 'not working' however I agree with your comments except one about dealers....I'd rather you narrow it down to salesmen, parts dept, desk stafff or techs etc which is much fairer.

This time around I wanted something different, my other half wanted a Grande, she's driving it on a daily basis so she got the final say.

A woman of good taste then;)

I consider to be a low average MPG with them too and they thing a 1.4 8v Grande should average 32mpg on a long motorway run.

On motorway run you should be getting alot more than that.

Out of interest I called another garage in the same group to see if they could fit us in any sooner, they couldn't but they did confirm that they had seen a Grande at the end of last year with the same flood in the footwell, he couldn't remember the cause but thought it was "a seam" at fault.

Doubt it if its coming in at the front, correct me if i'm wrong but its very wet on drivers side only & around centre tunnel/pedal area?

Re: Grande Punto, Grande Flood. help!!!

hope you get it soon and your patience with fiats pays off eventually!!!

Surely you must be able to see where it is coming in when you are driving in rain if there is that much getting in.

You'd think so but I can't see anything obvious and don't really want to rip the interior apart until Fiat have had a look. There was a puddle behind the drivers seat but no sign of water above that, it doesn't seem to be a window or door seal but I really need to have a better look at it when I get a spare moment.

The water appeared after the car was parked up, apparently it was dry when my good lady went to work, by close of business the rear footwell was a puddle - it's as if it's getting in from above but I can't find any evidence to support this and don't want to get the pressure washer out and make it all wet again.

The main area of wetness was behind the drivers seat but I have a very steep driveway and the car was parked upwards, this made bailing out easier but may have caused any water in the main footwell to run backwards. Having said this that area didn't feel saturated like the back, it was "damp" but I put this down to the water soaking through from the back to the front. She didn't complain about her shoes getting ruined on the drive home either ;)

I suppose the firewall would be the obvious place for water to be getting in like this if it's not a window or door deal hopefully I'll be able to have a better look at it tonight. The odd thing is that it's been out in bad rain plenty of times, washed with the high pressure hose and so on but all of sudden it's decided to start letting it in.

I'll keep you updated for future reference, thanks for your help and input so far (y)

Oh and thanks for the MPG confirmation, the 1.2 16v ELX averaged ~46mpg during the time we had it, the 1.4 8v giving 30>35 shocked me a little.

Thats what my other car did. The seal had gone (bit was actually missing!) at the bottom of the door where it meets the B pillar.

It could be the same with yours or maybe the door is not aligned quite right so there is a gap at the bottom of the door and that's why so much water is getting in.

Cheers, I'll have a good look around there tonight, at the very least I'll be able to bodge a repair until it goes in to the garage :)

If you have a friendly DJ ask to borrow their smoke machine my sisters KA was leaking in couldn't see an obvious water path so pumped the car full of smoke and found the water was getting in through the grommet into the engine compartment just above the fuse board..

just had to clean a bit of smoke fluid residue off the inside of the glass afterwards but i found and hopefully solved the problem :D

Working in the engine bay look for the large black rubber grommet on the bulkhead (its big...about a foot wide & 8 inches high) on the bottom of this grommet is a lip with (if you look very carefully) a small drain hole. This hole is not big enough during very wet conditions & it also tilts up thus catching water.Try cutting a inch off the lip so water can easily drain off but be careful not to damage the seal..get garage to do it if your unsure.Hopefully this will cure the leak.

On the subject of economy which was mentioned earlier in this post......Me and the wife have just got back from a friends wedding in Shropshire. It was a round trip of about 180 miles and we went in her car, a 1.2 8v Dynamic. I bet a chinese on me against an indian on her tonight that I could get a better MPG on the M-way than she could. She took me up on the offer but insisted on driving down, she had this idea that heading south on the M6 means you are going downhill, but thats my missus. Rules were simple, no faster than 70, no slower than 60.

The results, according to the fuel computer and over a distance of 90 miles:
The wife......46.8mpg
Me..............48.6mpg

It took about an hour and a half to make the trip and we both tried our absolute hardest to keep the mpg figure as high as possible. It wasnt a normal driving style for either of us and its was a good laugh! I think there is going to be very very little room for improvement on these figures.

Chicken jalfezi please!

Mine does exactly the same.

T, is it a fault that water gets in, or is the reason for the drain hole there because thats how the bootlid was designed to let in water then let it run out again?

Sorry but thats not a drain hole.

The small hole to the side is nothing more than a means to install the bung onto the tailgate in the first place. As such the boot door remains sealed while the door is closed.

As soon as you open the door the hole is exposed and the water pisses out.:bang:

Thanks for all your replies about the leaking Grande Punto, I've had enough with Fiat Uk and the dealerships, SOLD it! Bought a Volvo c30, hope they have a better attitude to customer service than Fiat UK. Newdog22, sighing off for good.
