Technical Steering Rack Noise

When I first noticed this problem with my car, the dealer suggested I phone the AA to check if the car is safe to drive. He had a good look underneath and all was fine. The steering rack issue is just a noise. It's faulty but totally 100% safe. I've been driving mine for over 3 months with this problem and have had no problems (apart from the nise obviously). Can't wait to get the thing fixed. Going to chase it up now actually.

Good luck

What kind of noise is it?

It's like a thumping/shuddering kind of noise when going over uneven surfaces. Quite loud. Especially if you put your ear closer to the passenger footwell, where the noise comes from.

Any bells ringing?

That thumping/shuddering kind of noise when going over uneven surfaces do you mean that it happends when hitting speedbumps because I have that on those but not on uneven surfaces on the road like a bad road. Anyway, what I have sounds like the suspension and it seems that everyone has that.

I'm worried, but not heard a thing yet.

I'm not worried for this. Like I said I have some kind of sound that I guess is from the suspension but I only hear it when moving over a speedbump. So either I have no problem or the roads in GB are really bad.:p

oh dear, hope you get it sorted ok guys. BMW had MASSIVE probs with noisy mini steering racks which tooks ages to cure so at least you know its not uncommon, just a damn pain!

Glyn Hopkin, absolute jokers. I had my car towed home by the AA who informed me that the car was not roadworthy, Glyn hopkin couldnt make up their mind if it was or wasnt.
Ive been on the phone all day and writing letters trying to get my car taken away but to no avail.
I have a Conditional Sale Agreement which means i basically have no rights in law, its a case that i didnt find the fault before 3 weeks so i have to carry on paying for a car that has been deemed un-roadworthy. Im not taking this laying down....£9070 for a car, steering rack f****d after 1200 miles, cant get out the passenger door....but i have to keep accepting repairs!!!! I dont want repairs, i want me money back and my finance cleared so i can get a car that i can enjoy.
Well ive got the car at home now, gona talk to my solicitor tomorrow and hopefully sort things out.
Oh yea, aa said excessive play in the rack which will only get worse and would on its own fail an MOT.

That is f***ing rediculous for a new car!. Hope it goes well and you can get a car you can enjoy. Just stay away from peogeot as you will get more of the same with them, probably along the lines of fires!.

cheers chris, getting my solicitor to look at the paperwork and sort the feckers out.
By hook or by crook they are getting the car back, even if it means i accidently drive it through the showroom window or into a load of stock...oops.... thought a dog run out in front of me

I think ive got em!!!!
Just sent them a letter recinding the agreement under the sale of goods act.
Should hear soon if they wana do it the easy way or the expensive hard way, not bothered either way my solicitor knows this law inside out and has got them by the nuts lol.
Also trading standards are looking into them under section 75(1) Road traffic act 1988. This means the car was sold to me in an unroadworthy condition, which is against the law, Glyn Hopkin could get a £5000 fine and there traders licence revoked.....result!
Why couldnt they have just swapped my car, would have saved me time and money and maybe their licence to trade lol.

Did you try contacting *** (FIAT UK)? I read a statementt from their head guy who said they were clamping down on incompetent dealers and that any misconduct could lead to dealers being closed. I've got the article at home so will post it later on this evening for your viewing pleasure.

The dealer in question should be able to help you for ***'s sake!

Yea ive tried Fiat uk, they have allocated me a reference number, BUT they cant speak to me cos the person i spoke to was just help desk or something.
Another waste of time eh.

I believe FIAT should recall all GP for this steering rack issue before someone gets killed. I've got the same problem (GP 1.4 Active 77HP) and I was told to wait 4 weeks for the replacement. Is it safe to drive around with a improper steering rack? Can I cause more problems to my car?
If FIAT wants to survive must improve its Quality Control significantly.

Recalling all GPs for the rack I don't think is necessary since only the first cars delivered had the problem......the cars coming out after April/may seem to be alright.....All friends I have with cars delivered to them June / July don't have the problem. Me also don't have the problem abt 2500Km now.....

I think that this problem you either have it from the very beginning or you don't have it.

However, I agree that the Quality control should be improved but after all,.....you are buying a Fiat not a BMW,Mercedes, etc.......

What I know is that my car 20 days now is completely trouble free, (apart fm one small defect already rectified) is riunning good and I am really enjoying it....so I guess either I am very lucky or you guys in uk are really unlucky...

hello fellow compatriot.
my car was delivered to me last week of June (Kontelis car dealer).
The problem was confirmed by them. I am waiting for the replacement.
Unfortunately I am not enjoying my car.
Any comment about safety in relation the steering rack?

I've been assured by my dealer that the car is perfectly safe to drive and that the reason the steering rack is faulty is because its causing a noise and nothing more. My new rack is finally ready to fit after 4 weeks of waiting!

I think is safe to drive.....I also asked many others with the problem who were driving the car for 1-2 months....no actual problem apart from noise,....same told by 2-3 dealers I asked and Fiat service stations.....
